My story

[p]UPDATE: I finished it! Full details to come...[/p][p]I'm running the London Marathon to raise money for Brain Research UK to support their ongoing research into neurological conditions like brain tumours, dementia and strokes. In 2005, we lost my brother Simon to a brain tumour, and then last year my Mum died after a stroke following several years of watching dementia take her away from us.[/p][p]Brain conditions are horrible things, and we still know so little about how our brains work and why these conditions have their terrible effect on people and their families. Watching someone you love with a tumour or dementia is a long-term painful process of watching them change and slip away from you a piece at a time. I've gone through this twice, and I'm running the Marathon to fund research that may mean others in the future don't have to go through the same thing.[/p][p]Every bit you can donate will help fund life-changing neurological research and bring us closer to understand the causes and possible cures for something that affects almost every family in some form.[/p][p]This is going to be a long hard day for me. I only started running in 2017 when a friend persuaded me to have a go at our local Parkrun, and now I'm taking this on. It's going to be tough, and it's going to be hurt, but knowing I'm helping others avoid the pain my family has gone through will make it worth it.[/p][p]I've written more on why I'm doing this and how I got into running which you can read here on Medium, where I'm also going to be posting regular updates on my training:[/p][p]34 weeks to go - ten miles in the countryside[/p][p]Running out of 2018 and into 2019[/p][p]In a month's time I'll be running a marathon[/p][p]The pictures below are my family before Simon's death (Mum in the middle, Simon on the right), me running the Colchester Half Marathon as part of my marathon training, and Simon in Fuerteventura in 2002.[/p]

Thinking of you as you run. It's not just the few hours today, it's the many months of training. Brilliant effort.
