My story

[p]I have decided to give myself this challenge in order to do all I can to help raise awareness of cytomegalovirus (CMV), and to support CMV action, a charity close to my heart.[/p][p][br][/p][p]When I tell people I’m doing the ‘channel swim’ they are very impressed, until I tell them I’m doing it for the month of June, in a pool! I’m not the strongest swimmer, so for me, 21 miles (even over the month) will be a huge challenge! If I’m able to walk more than 100 miles on top of this, it’ll be a great achievement. My aim is to walk a marathon a week![/p][p][br][/p][p]June is CMV awareness month. I hadn’t even heard of CMV until my best friend’s son, Alfie, was diagnosed with congenital CMV shortly after being born. Helen and I have been friends for over 30 years. We were due within weeks of each other, but when we realised we had given birth at the same time, in the same hospital, in rooms next door to each other, it was the most magical moment.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Alfie was taken into special care, where he spent 3 weeks with Helen by his side. It was suspected that CMV was passed onto Alfie early on in pregnancy, which Helen most probably contracted by kissing her other children or sharing their food. After a long, worrying 3 weeks in hospital, Alfie was home but had many more hospital visits for the majority of his first year. He has been significantly affected by CMV that in turn will bring many challenges to his life.[/p][p][br][/p][p]As an outsider looking in, their strength as a family astounds me, but I know there have been difficult times and many challenges. Alfie is the most beautiful boy and I love him very much. He is such a happy sole who’s three sisters absolutely adore him. Although there may be more challenges ahead, Alfie is an absolute superstar and will approach each one with determination.[/p][p][br][/p][p]CMV is a common virus that can infect people of all ages, causing no signs or symptoms. Many adults and children will contract CMV in their lifetime. However, if a pregnant woman contracts the virus it can be passed on to her unborn child with catastrophic results. In the UK, around 1000 babies are born with CMV, many with no symptoms at birth, and may go on to develop hearing loss or developmental problems.[/p][p][br][/p][p]By raising awareness, I hope to help stop the spread of CMV and the potentially devastating impact it can have on everyone involved. CMV action is a charity that advises and supports families affected by congenital CMV.[/p]
