My story

[p]I am running the London Marathon this year to raise money for the charity Headway and this is why......[/p][p]On the 29th December 2017 my brother Simon and his wife were walking home when they were hit by a car. That night our whole world was turned upside down. Simon suffered severe head injuries and was airlifted to hospital. His wife Anne-Marie also had broken bones and other awful injuries.[/p][p]I will never forget taking that phone call from my distraught Mum and that night at the hospital was the worst night of our lives.[/p][p]Simon was extremely poorly and seeing him hooked up to so many machines was scary. We were told to prepare for the worst which is something I simply can’t describe.[/p][p]During the months that Simon was in Walsgrave hospital he faced so many obstacles and set backs but each and every one of Simons family and friends were positive he would recover even in the darkest of times.[/p][p]Until a tragedy hits your family you never really know how you’ll cope. Our Mum and Dad, Anne-Marie and his daughter Sally were unbelievably strong, staying with Simon every single day.[/p][p]Simon’s son Max was 5 at the time and coped so well but missed his daddy so much.[/p][p]Overnight we all became medical experts, we even thought we knew better than the doctors sometimes! We did also manage to laugh at some bizarre things in between. Mum thinking a dead body was being wheeled into the lift with her was a personal favourite of mine.[/p][p]When we were in the waiting room after Simon had started to improve, we watched each time a family were called into the dreaded “bad news room”. We were on a high having had positive news for Simon but feeling desperately helpless for those families that only ever received bad news. We saw people with awful injuries and illnesses and the effect it had on their families. We also heard some horrific stories that will always stay with us all forever.[/p][p]I’m running the London marathon for Headway which is a charity that help people with brain injuries as well as supporting their families.[/p][p]By the time we found out about headway we didn’t really need them as much as we may have done in the early days, but seeing the work they do for those other families is amazing.[/p][p]I couldn’t really do a lot for Simon at the time so this is my way of doing something to pay back for the good the charity do for others.[/p][p]A year later Simon has made an incredible but difficult recovery and we are so very proud of him. Seeing him back at home with his family enjoying the simple things we all take for granted is simply incredible and heart warming.[/p][p]Running the marathon is a massive challenge for me, especially with a 2 year old child permanently attached to my left leg!![/p][p]A huge thank you to my parents, my husband Adam, Anne-Marie, Sally, Max, Charlie, Georgie, Glynn, Ted, Paul, the rest of the Preston and Streets extended family and Simon’s friends for all their support.[/p][p]Thank you for reading my story and if you can donate anything to the page big or small I would be extremely grateful xx[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
