My story

[p]I'm running for charity![/p][p]Gerrards Cross 5km (17th May)[/p][p]RunFest, 2.5km and 5km (23rd May)[/p][p]Vitality London 10km (25th May)[/p][p]For many this is not an issue, but for me you know this is a massive deal. Running has never come naturally and to be honest I don't really enjoy it, but the motivation to push myself has come from the tragic story below. (and changing my life in the process, as the picture above shows)[/p][p]I am raising money for Bone Cancer research, specifically EWING'S SARCOMA. [/p][p]Why? In 2017 a member of my daughters swimming club, finally lost her courageous battle against this rare and very aggressive disease, just 2 weeks after her 14th Birthday. [/p][p]Very little research is funded for this form of bone cancer, and survival rates have not improved in the past 30 years. [/p][p]I can not imagine the pain of losing a child, but her wish was that a fund was started in her name to help raise desperately needed research funds. [/p][p]At the time of writing this Liberty's Legacy has already raised over £350,000 and I would dearly love to make a significant difference. [/p][p]This isn't my story, it's the story of Liberty Grace Schurer, and her family. [/p][p]If you have a box of tissues to hand, read on, then please donate what you can.[/p][p]After a courageous 13 month battle with cancer, our beloved daughter, Liberty Grace, sadly gained her angel wings on October 11th 2017, just 2 weeks after celebrating her 14th birthday.[/p][p]Liberty was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma in September 2016 on her 13th birthday. It is a rare and very aggressive form of bone cancer.[/p][p]During her gruelling treatment, Liberty was an absolute inspiration to us all, she just got on with it in typical Libs fashion, rarely loosing her amazing and oh so cheeky sense of humour, that dazzling smile for which she will forever be remembered, rarely slipping from her face. We could not have been more proud.[/p][p]Sadly just days from finishing treatment in August 2017, Liberty discovered a new lump and we received the news we had forever dreaded. Not only had the Ewing's returned, but devastatingly it had extensively spread throughout her lungs, her liver and her lymph glands. There was nothing more that could be done.[/p][p]But still she fought on with that fierce determination that she was so known for, opting for yet more chemotherapy to try and extend her life. But the cancer was just too aggressive, the tumour burden too great, her now tiny frame just too weak.[/p][p]It was during these last few weeks that the idea for Liberty's Legacy was born. Throughout the course of her illness Liberty's biggest frustration and indeed ours was the total lack of funding and research into this deadly form of the disease. The protocol with which she was treated was decades old, designed for adults, and sadly survival rates for Ewing's have not improved in over 30 years. How could this be?[/p][p]Liberty's greatest wish was therefore that we fundraise in her name, with all proceeds to go towards research into Ewing's, so that no other child need suffer in the same way and no other family be devastatingly ripped apart. Through Liberty's Legacy, we hope that her name will live on and allow us to bring Liberty into the future with us, and give honour and meaning to her life.[/p][p]We hope Liberty would be proud of what we have achieved so far but so much more needs to be done and we need your help. Liberty and so many just like her had so much to give and deserved so much more. We greatly value any contribution or support you can give, however large or small, as together we can make a difference.... until there is a cure.[/p][p]If you would like to link your own personal fundraising event or challenge in order to support Liberty's Legacy, please just follow the link at the bottom of the page entitled 'Link your personal fundraising Challenge'.
