My story

[p]I am very excited to tell you I am going on a 100km hike across the Wadi Rum desert and summiting Jabal Umm Ad Dami, Jordan’s highest mountain at 1,854m. This will take place 31 Oct to 3 Nov 2021 in support of the charity Walking With The Wounded.[/p][p]I will be doing 4 consecutive days hiking in the desert, 22-25 km each day with a mountain on one of them at possibly 25–28 degrees Celsius. [/p][p]This isn’t my first distance hike: I was previously lucky enough to join a group attempting the Welsh 3000s back in 2009, photo evidence below on Crib Goch (923m), woolly hat not required for Jordan. I managed 8 of the 15 peaks on day 1. Our support team picked us up and dropped us back at camp – though I don’t think they expected to have to pull me out of the car, because I had seized up! I unfortunately had to sit out day 2.[/p][p]It’s now 12 years on and the only thing I know is how much more training I need to do, particularly after my latest stint as a couch potato. I have started and made it past my nemesis, “week 6“ in the Couch to 5k app. Squats for tougher quads, HIIT, yoga and hill walking are all in progress.[/p][p]Walking With The Wounded are doing excellent work with veterans and I am proud to support them. They have partnered up with over 100 NHS trusts with their Head Start programme. From emergency NHS referrals they provide mental health care, aiming to find a therapist within 10 days and a 10-mile radius. The average in 2020 was within 7 days and 4 miles. For anyone who has tried to access mental health services you know just how vital this time and distance is to the recipient.[/p][p]They have employment advisors embedded in veteran supported accommodation and are working with NHS mental health teams to secure positive employment outcomes. Project Nova supports veterans who have been arrested and enter Police Custody, and through referral by specialist Police teams or other statutory organisations. Their staff are skilled at engaging with veterans to understand their experiences and transition back to civilian life.[/p][p]For more information please visit their website:[/p][p][/p][p]Having married an Army veteran and now an ex-Met police officer, I have seen what they must sacrifice on society’s behalf.[/p][p]I feel that veterans need more support, more acknowledgment, and more access to mental health care. They have my support – can they have yours?[/p][p]With that in mind, I ask for your sponsorship and donations for this great charity, to enable them to continue their invaluable work.[/p][p]I have paid for the trip costs, so all donations go direct to Walking With The Wounded.[/p][p]Thanks for your time and generosity.[/p][p]Nikki[/p]
