Team story
[p]Thanks for visiting our page. As ever, we continue to raise money and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease and Alzheimer's Disease, and this year we have set ourselves the challenge of trying to run/cycle 2020 miles each throughout the year whilst completing a number of events. Last year I managed only 700 miles, so this will be quite a challenge! We have both signed up for cycling events which are currently way out of our comfort zones, so really have to up the ante on the bikes too![/p][p]Our events:[/p][p]Cambridge half marathon, Oundle 20-miler - both managed to be squeezed in before lockdown![/p][p]COMPLETED VIRTUALLY[/p][p]Star Wars half marathon (both)[/p][p]P24: The Longest Day Challenge (1 mile, on the hour, every hour, for 24 hours)[/p][p]POSTPONED/CANCELLED: [/p][p]Runs: Manchester marathon - rescheduled for October; Brighton marathon (Christine) 2021; Endure 24 - team 2021, Endure 24 Leeds - Solo (Christine) 2021, Great North Run 2021, St Neots half 2021[/p][p]Cycling: Brighton 50k (Mike) 2021; Essex 50-mile Velo (Christine); Essex 100-mile Velo (Mike)[/p][p]Duathlons: London full Duathlon (both)[/p][p]UPDATE: in the current situation, most of our events have been postponed or cancelled for this year - we await to hear about the autumn events, but these could easily fall prey to the ongoing Covid-19 situation. Despite restrictions, we are trying to stay as fit as we can and will still endeavour to achieve the 2020 miles by the end of the year - which will now be an even bigger challenge! [/p][p]Many of you know our story - in 2006 I lost mam to Motor Neurone Disease, just 10 months after diagnosis. The disease robbed her of her ability to walk, move, swallow and talk. It's progressive, aggressive, terminal. It's indiscriminate and so far, there is no treatment and no cure. Sadly Mike's dad, who suffered from Alzheimer's for over 10 years, passed away in October 2019. Alzheimer's is another cruel disease; it robs you of your memories and leaves only the physical shell of the person you once were. No treatment, no cure.[/p][p]The MNDA supports families and sufferers by providing equipment such as Lightwriters, adapted chairs etc. to enable those with the disease to maintain an independent life as far as is possible, and to ease some of the symptoms where this can be done. Although mam lost the ability to talk, she used a Lightwriter to communicate - those of you who knew mam will know how important that was to her! They also fund important research, in the hope of one day ridding the world of this cruel disease.[/p][p]Alzheimer's Research UK fund the very best biomedical research, from basic to clinical, that improves our understanding of all the causes of different dementias or improves diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Their ultimate goal is a preventative treatment or intervention for neurodegenerative diseases.[/p][p]The MNDA will receive 75% of any funds we raise, and Alzheimer's Research UK 25%. Please join us and help us ensure that in the future, these diseases are well and truly eradicated.[/p][p]Until there's a cure, there is no finish line!!![/p][p]Thank you for your ongoing support; we really, really appreciate every penny![/p][p]Christine & Mike xx[/p]
