My story

[p]On October 3rd I will be running the iconic London Marathon which is step 1 of my fundraising efforts for The Chloe Bigmore Trust. Step 2 will be running 10 marathons in 10 days from 26th November to 5th December at Samphire Hoe, Dover. Whilst I have run a few marathons over the years, this will be my biggest physical and mental challenge ever. I feel honoured to help raise money for such an amazing cause and ask that you DIG DEEP to support the Chloe Bigmore Trust.[/p][p]The “Chloe Bigmore Trust” was set up in 2008 after Chloe tragically passed away aged 14, in December 2007. It was a very rare cancer that took Chloe called Desmoplastic Round Cell Sarcoma. Chloe’s parents, Paul and Lesley, were desperate to help find a cure for this awful disease and began fundraising in any way they could.[/p][p]Over the years they and others have done incredible things to raise money for this fantastic cause. Running 5k’s and even up to 268 miles! Triathlons, multiple marathons and lots of other incredible feats to get people donating.[/p][p]Chloe received the majority of her treatment at the Children’s hospital of Wales and being able to be close to her meant everything to Paul and Lesley. Their early fundraising efforts funded two rooms in a new wing at the hospital. One was a parent’s kitchen, where visiting parents could leave the wards and have a break with refreshments and the other was a family room where parents of young children could spend the night alongside their child in the ward.[/p][p]The Chloe Bigmore Trust has also supported the Ty-Hafan, a children’s hospice, by donating a significant contribution towards a new outside playground for the terminally ill children. [/p][p]The Trust’s fundraising efforts have enabled them to buy a baby resuscitation unit for the hospital and more recently, a number of laptops for the children isolated from family members due to the pandemic.[/p][p]The charity tries to ensure that all the money it collects is used exclusively to fund a specific item, rather than it get absorbed in general funding. [/p][p]In recent conversations with the Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU) they have learned that Virtual Reality technology is being used to help children through tremendously difficult times in their young lives.[/p][p]VR technology is a virtual reality distraction therapy tool to support pain relief, anxiety/stress and improves the patient experience. A trial of the technology on the children’s emergency unit proved a huge success supporting patients in a wide range of scenarios. They include the calming of a young person having a severe and prolonged panic attack, a chronically ill little boy with breathing difficulties who was too distressed to put on a nebuliser and a ten-year-old who needed painful manipulation of a broken arm. [/p][p]Children treated on PCCU are often anxious, they can be in a great deal of pain or distress and while there, may have to undergo invasive procedures that can be frightening and painful. The hospital is hoping to roll out the VR technology to the PCCU, as they know it will greatly benefit the 600 children who are treated there each year. [/p][p]The cost of the equipment which would bring great benefit to the children treated on PCCU is £3,500 for a year. £10,500 would therefore fund the equipment for three years. Please help me raise funds for this incredibly worthy cause!![/p]
