My story

[p]I'm Orla and I'm 18 years old. I have the opportunity, following my A Levels, to go to Nepal for a year. The 12 months would predominantly revolve around teaching English, ICT and maths in a small school - most likely a primary school. Given the limited electricity in Nepal I will teach using very limited resources; a cardboard keyboard perhaps and a blackboard and chalk. With 8 of 10 of the world's highest peaks, Nepal is a beautiful and challenging place to live, and I want to embrace this challenge and really feel like I'm living as part of a Nepalese community. I will be living alongside a family, and will learn how to cook a typical dal bhat and also learn the ways of subsistence farming. I'm excited to bring my experience of music and athletics to set up extra-curricular classes in a country where there is a lack of employment opportunities and an under-resourced education system which results in the majority of Nepalese from rural areas being forced into one of two life choices: to stay in their local village as a farmer or move to a big city in Nepal, or the Middle East, and become a labourer. A more expansive education and increased English language abilities will help Nepali students towards a wider range of opportunities than those currently available to them. I would like to use my knowledge of English in a positive way through teaching. As language is a passion of mine, I would also like to learn the Nepali language in order for me to improve my language skills.[/p][p]In order to raise this money, I plan to apply to Charitable Trusts seeking donations and I also hope to run events throughout the year. The £6200 I need to embark on this project will cover flights, insurance, support overseas as well as accommodation and food during this year abroad. However, I will still need to raise more money to cover my Visa and vaccinations. This money also allows for Project Trust to find new opportunities for volunteers in the future, so this excellent cultural exchange can continue to flourish. With 50 years of experience, the charity can ensure that I receive the support I need for the year abroad, and also that the projects remain useful and support the communities in which they are located. Thanks so much for supporting me on this incredible opportunity. Also, remember to Gift Aid to support Project Trust as a charity. [/p][p]To see what Project Trust is about, visit the link below.
