Team story

[p]THIS PAGE IS NOW CLOSED AFTER A FANTASTIC COLLECTION OF £4025 (including Gif Aid)[lt]br /[gt][lt]br /[gt]See new fundraising page at:[/p][p][span=font-size: x-small; line-height: 12px;]http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/PLANETS8[/span][/p][p][span=font-size: x-small; line-height: 12px;][lt]br /[gt][/span][/p][p]Hi,[/p][p]Thanks for visiting Ronny and Chris Allan's Southampton Hospital (PLANETS) Charity page. This is a record of our fundraising including a sponsored walk along the entire length of the World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall (84 miles) over the period 26 May - 1 Jun 14.  This is a tough challenge for Ronny & Chris.  Ronny was diagnosed with metastatic Neuroendocrine Cancer in July 2010 and his treatment continues.  [/p][p]We are also thankful to a number of people including Stephanie Mitchell, Helen Webb, Alex Amy and Jo Howitt who have helped with cake sales and collecting sponsorship money.  Additionally, Nick Naylor who is walking with us on Day 1, Dave Taylor who is walking with us on day 3 and Jim Waterson who joins us on day 4.  Truly humbled by this support.[/p][p]We intend posting pictures and Facebook/Twitter updates of our training and preparation and the walk itself which will be spaced over 6 days.  [/p][p][span=color: #008080; font-style: italic;]A short description of the Charity is below and in more detail at: [/span][span=color: #000000;]www.planetscharity.org/ [/span][/p][p][span=color: #0000ff;]PLANETS (Pancreatic, Liver and Neuroendocrine Tumours)[/span][/p][p][span=color: #0000ff;]PLANETS is part of Southampton Hospital Charity and raises funds to support a mix of less well known cancers which do not normally attract the attention of the media or the major funding sources.  Due to their rarity, not all hospitals can provide the specialist support and treatment required thus why centres of excellence for these types of cancers are created covering different areas of the country.  PLANETS fundraising provides support to patients across the south central coastal area including Southampton, New Forest, Bournemouth, Poole, Portsmouth, other outlying areas and occasionally further afield by referral.[/span][/p][p][span=color: #0000ff;]PLANETS initial aim was to raise £50,000 for a new mobile high resolution ultrasound machine and tumour ablation equipment which provides an efficient way to diagnose and then treat tumours some of which are often small and difficult to find.  This has now been raised and the item purchased.  However, due to generous donations, other items were able to be obtained including a radio-isotope therapy ‘shielded box and an isotope delivery system’, Other work in pipeline includes a refit of patient bathrooms to make a stay more comfortable (including mirrors and sink enabling patients to easily wash their hair), recruitment of a full-time lab based researcher for preliminary analysis into genetic sequencing (supporting a tumour bank) and collaboration with Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund into genetic sequencing.[/span][/p][p][span=color: #0000ff;]PLANETS is now aiming to raise another £100,000 to help bring intra-operative radiotherapy (IORT) to the Southampton centre of excellence.  This would be the first IORT theatre unit in the UK and would enable medical staff to massively reduce the risk of cancer coming back after surgery for advanced tumours. [/span][/p][p][span=color: #0000ff;]Some of the treatment undergone by PLANETS Cancer patients is palliative so the charity also provides a focal point for patients to keep in touch and share experiences with each other, occasionally via Patient Support Meetings and Study Days.[/span][/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to the charity. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
