My story

[p]With the help of the pack, saving an endangered species through art[/p][p]Artists for Painted Dogs is a collaboration of over 30 international artists and photographers who are raising funds for the conservation of the endangered African Painted Dog (aka Painted Wolf/African Wild Dog) and at the same time aim to raise awareness for this African underdog.[/p][p]At www.artistsforpainteddogs.com - the online virtual exhibition - you can buy amazing works of wildlife art, knowing that 50% of what you are paying is donated to the conservation of this enigmatic species.[/p][p]The exhibition opens for sales at 12.00 noon BST on 6 October. The preview gallery will be open from 30th September.[/p][p]This Virgin Money Giving page has been set up for anyone who would like to make a donation. [/p][p]***[/p][p]Funds raised here and through the exhibition, will be distributed via Painted Dog Conservation UK to support Painted Dog Conservation (PDC) and Wildlife ACT, two of the foremost field organisations in Africa, caring for the welfare of painted dogs.[/p][p]We hope to fund as many items on the wish lists of Wildlife ACT and PDC as possible. Whether protective tracking collars for the dogs or equipment for the Anti-Poaching Units, every item can make a huge difference. Please take a look at what PDC and Wildlife ACT told us, to find out more about their hopes for this fundraiser. [/p][p]Just one painted dog saved from a snare by trackers, or not getting caught because the anti-poaching unit already removed the snare, can have a noticeable positive impact. For example, conservationists have tracked over 140 descendants to one alpha female which was rescued from a snare.[/p][p]***[/p][p]African Painted Dogs are unique, neither dog nor wolf but canids in a separate genus called Lycaon - very distant cousins to our domestic dogs.[/p][p]About 80% of their hunts are successful, due to their high intelligence, teamwork and communication skills, however, they only hunt to feed.[/p][p]Painted dogs are hugely social animals and exemplary in the dedication they show each other’s well-being. When members of a pack fall ill, are injured or age prevents them from hunting, the rest of the pack cares for and feeds them.[/p][p]A century ago, approximately 500,000 painted dogs roamed the African continent. Less than 6,500 remain in the wild today as a result of ongoing habitat fragmentation, painful deaths caused by snares, diseases caught from domestic dogs or killed in road traffic accidents.[/p][p]Today, this remarkable species is extinct in 11 African countries and possibly extinct in eight other countries, according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.[/p][p]It is for this reason that Artists have come together for painted dogs. First to raise awareness of the species globally and secondly to raise much needed money ( especially with the additional challenges brought by Covid 19 ) to support two incredible organisations in the field working to save painted dogs and to support the communities in the areas where painted dogs are still found.[/p][p] [/p]
