My story

[p]On 24th March 2020, just after my 19th Birthday, I was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system which forms part of the body’s immune system. To treat the cancer, I underwent 6 months of chemotherapy at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester and thanks to their incredible TYA team I am now in remission.[/p][p] [/p][p]On June 22nd; Phil, Alex, Jorge and I will be setting off to walk the 240 miles from our university campus in London, covering 30-35 miles per day, before arriving at The Christie at lunchtime on June 29th. We will be raising money for Cancer Research UK and The Christie Charity. Without an effective treatment, my diagnosis would have left me with less than a year to live so it’s thanks to the amazing work of these charities that I am able to do this event.[/p][p] [/p][p]Each day 7 young people aged 15-24 are diagnosed with cancer in the UK and 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. This is why we want to make sure we’re doing our bit to help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured and ensure everyone who receives a cancer diagnosis can experience the incredible feeling of beating the disease. Cancer will affect all of us in our lifetime, so whether it be for someone in your past, present or future please help us to beat cancer sooner.[/p][p] [/p][p]The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is the largest single cancer centre in Europe and it is internationally renowned for its research and care that goes above and beyond thanks to the donations they receive. The staff at the hospital were amazing and I finished my treatment with genuine friendships with those who had treated me.[/p][p] [/p][p]Cancer Research UK are on a mission to beat cancer as soon as possible, its scientists revolutionised the fight against Hodgkin Lymphoma and further funding will help them continue to fight all types of cancer.[/p][p] [/p][p]Cancer survival rates in the UK have doubled to 50% in the last 40 years thanks to research driven by fundraising. However, with survival rates varying from 1%-98% between cancer types, I am very lucky Hodgkin Lymphoma has an effective treatment and I know there is still a long way to go in the fight against the disease and that beating cancer is not a right; it is a possibility that can only be unlocked through donations and fundraising.[/p][p] [/p][p]A massive thank you to everyone who contributes in any way they can; whether that be through donating, fundraising or sharing my story with family and friends. I’d also like to give a massive thank you to the corporate sponsors of this event; Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation, Boohoo, The Peel Group, Regatta, The Steve Morgan Foundation and Together.[/p]
