My story

Hi,

As you may know I have Type 1 Diabetes meaning I need 4 injections of insulin a day to balance my food intake. This is a minor irritation when trying to complete long distance endurance events, but one that I have overcome having completed the London marathon 5 times before, and 5 other marathons, as well as countless half marathons and quite a few triathlons.

However the insulin I inject is only a treatment for Diabetes Mellitus, this condition still does not have a known cause or cure. I have had this since 1982 and was fortunate enough to be in my mid 20's. However there are many much younger children who become suddenly insulin dependent, and it is to fund research to find a cure for all of these unfortunate youngsters that I am asking you to look in your wallet for some spare cash.

Whatever you can afford to donate, my employer (Fidelity Investments) will match up to a maximum of £750. The money will be donated equally between Diabetes UK and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, who both fund research. Diabetes UK cover both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, where as JDRF specialise in Type 1 (which used to be called Juvenile Diabetes or Insulin Depepndent Diabetes).

Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.

So I'm running a marathon on the morning of April 25th, can you make a small donation to make the undoubted pain of finishing a little more worth while, and however much it is - thank you very much.

Paul.

I finished the race in 3hours 55minutes with 4-5 walking intervals in the last 7 miles which was not what I wanted at all, but with cramp threatening in my calves, was the only practical way to finish. The walk to Victoria was hard work but worthwile for the wonderful support pledged here - thanks.
