My story

[p]From 4th – 12th September 2021, I will be riding from Lands End to John O’Groats (Ride Across Britain) to raise funds for The Middlesbrough and Teesside Philanthropic Foundation (MTPF).[/p][p]Over 9 consecutive days I will cycle 980 miles with over 52,000 feet of climbing. No wonder the ride is known as ‘the UK’s most iconic cycling challenge’![/p][p]In 2015, after not riding a bike since my school years, the team at Active Financial Planners decided to ride the ‘Coast to Coast’ raising funds for the MTPF. Six years on and cycling has become a part of my life, particularly in the last 12 months throughout the various lockdowns the UK has endured. For me cycling is ‘my time’ to collect my thoughts and ‘clear the head’ from the personal and work challenges Covid has bestowed upon us all.[/p][p]As soon as I successfully received one of the 1,000 entries for the Ride Across Britain I knew my charity of choice would be the MTPF. Established in 2011 Active Financial Planners were one of the earliest Patrons and we have worked closely with the Foundation ever since.[/p][p]The Foundation has two key functions; to support community groups and facilities based within Teesside which promote social wellbeing and provide support to those who find themselves at a disadvantage in the society they live in, including but not exclusively the homeless, those recovering from an addiction, the long term unemployed, those living in poverty or living with a disability and secondly to support such people into work by acting as a catalyst to employment schemes.[/p][p]Teesside is a deprived area of the UK, it has higher crime rates, more pupils eligible for school meals and higher unemployment than the national average. However, it also has great resilience and motivation to excel in areas. [/p][p]The Foundation’s recent focus has been supporting the local charities and community groups who have dedicated their efforts to helping those fighting to keep their 'heads above the water line' during the Covid crisis. [/p][p]In the last year the Foundation has -[/p][p]Distributed more than £24,000 of supermarket vouchers to help families put food on the table, utilising their strong relationships with schools and local groups who have rallied to help the most vulnerable during the pandemic.[/p][p]Issued £8,250 in small grants to local good causes who have cooked and delivered meals to those who were shielding, those on the frontline and the elderly. [/p][p]The Foundation has also donated £4,000 to our local foodbanks, distributed more than 400L of hand sanitiser and more than 2,000 face masks. [/p][p]Donated 65 iPads to hospitals and hospices, enabling loved ones to stay connected.[/p][p]Provided pyjamas, underwear and toiletries for James Cook Hospital and care homes.[/p][p]Donated beds, washing machines and cookers to struggling local families.[/p][p]The Foundation does many great things and will continue to do so. Every donation made will help further as the UK comes out of ‘Lockdown no. 3’. For me, this is when support will be needed most as the longer term effects of the pandemic unravel.[/p][p]Thank you for your support and thank you to the Foundation for all the great work you do for our area.[/p][p]Stay safe,[/p][p]Paul [/p][p] [/p][p] [/p]
