My story

[p]Update[/p][p]I successfully completed the London Marathon with a time of 4:02:35. A brilliant, memorable day! I really enjoyed it! A huge thanks to my friends, family and the Versus Arthritis Events Team for the fantastic support - it really made a difference. Special thanks to my wife Emma for putting up with me over the last 18-weeks and yes, you are taller than me. [/p][p]My story[/p][p]Arthritis steals from millions of people every single day. I am joining the push back by running the Virgin London Marathon for Versus Arthritis. Formed from the merger of Arthritis Care and Arthritis Research UK Versus Arthritis are working alongside people with arthritis to raise awareness of what it’s like to live with the pain fatigue and isolation arthritis causes. Funding breakthrough treatments, providing information and support and tirelessly campaigning to make arthritis the priority is should be. My mum had arthritis. I remember her swollen finger joints and having to get her wedding ring cut off, as it was constricting her finger. Arthritis gradually intruded on her life, progressively limiting, then stopping her doing many of the things she loved and was so good at – knitting, dress making and cake decoration. It was physically painful too and she had to have a knee replacement.[/p][p]I started running in 2016, initially to complete a mini triathlon with a couple of mates. I was confident about the cycling and swimming but hadn’t done much running. I injured my knee in my 20’s and whenever I ran, I experienced debilitating pain. I thought by building up running slowly I might overcome the injury. We didn’t do the triathlon but I really got into the running. I completed four half marathons in 2018, getting faster each time. I'm fitter than I've ever been and a lot more in tune with my body – it’s helping me manage the inevitable physical decline that comes with age and it’s been good for my waistline too! Running’s also great for my mental health and helps me cope with demands of a stressful job.[/p][p]Running for a cause I believe in will hopefully spur me on to achieve my target of completing the marathon in under four and a half hours.[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
