My story

[p]I’m a chess coach and boxing writer based in Coventry. [/p][p][br][/p][p][img][/img][/p][p]My ex-colleague and good friend Scott Crowther’s six-year-old son, Ben, was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer known as Rhabdomyosarcoma. I have known Scott and his family for a few years now; they’re all fantastic people. Ben’s older brothers James and Harry have been keen members of the Coventry Chess Academy, the children’s chess club which I run, and Ben has also been known to enjoy a game or two! [/p][p][br][/p][p]You can only imagine the tough times Ben and his family are going through right now, but the strength and positivity they’re showing is awe-inspiring. [/p][p][br][/p][p]‘During Ben’s long road to recovery, we know that smiles, laughter and general silliness is helping him through, so we are raising money, generating pledges and increasing awareness so we can all do something to ‘Pass The Smile’ to others.’[/p][p][br][/p][p]So on 26th September, I will be throwing my hat into the ring in support…quite literally! I will be taking to the boxing ring AND the chessboard to raise funds for the charities supporting Ben as he undergoes treatment. These are CLIC Sargent, BCH Ward 18 Oncology, Molly Olly's wishes, Children with Cancer UK and The Chris Lucas Trust.[/p][p][br][/p][p]I will be lacing up the gloves to face boxing pro, the one-and-only Dave Allen AKA ‘The White Rhino’ (14-2-4 with 11 KOs), all 6ft 3 and 18 stone of him! [/p][p][br][/p][p]Dave is one of the best-known heavyweights on the British boxing scene and is coming off a sensational knockout victory live on Sky which saw him become the number one contender for the British heavyweight title. Dave has sparred countless rounds with Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and other world-class heavyweights. He’s got a reputation for being one of the toughest big men out there, having shared a ring with the likes of contender Dillian Whyte, world title challenger Luis Ortiz and 2016 Olympic gold medallist Tony Yoka, NONE of whom were able to take him off his feet. So as a 5ft 5, 10 stone boxing novice (and that’s without any disrespect to boxing novices out there) I’ve got my work cut out. [/p][p][br][/p][p]As well as having a heart of gold, Dave is a competitive animal; he’ll take on any man, anywhere, anytime in any sport. So he sportingly agreed to also play me in a chess match, which evens out our contest somewhat. Provided I’m not too punch-drunk after tasting heavyweight power of course.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Any amount you donate, small or large, will go towards making a massive difference for Ben and his family as well as other children who are affected by cancer. September just happens to be Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, so what better time to make a contribution and raise awareness![/p][p][br][/p][p]Thanks for the support and don't forget to #PassTheSmile :-)[/p][p][br][/p][p]UPDATE 30/09/2018:[/p][p]I'm pleased to report that I survived my encounter with ‘The White Rhino’ intact. As for how I fared in the ring, let’s just say that giving up nine inches in height, eight stone in weight and a lifetime of boxing experience were obstacles which proved too great to be overcome… I retained some semblance of pride in the chess match but not after facing more resistance from Dave than I was able to offer in the ring![/p][p][br][/p][p][img][/img][/p][p]A video will be coming out shortly and the kids are going to have an absolute field day if they see it, even with the aid of heavy censorship![/p][p][br][/p][p]Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day with countless hilarious and memorable moments. Massive thanks again to Rob Tebbutt, Andi Purewal, Boxing Social and of course the-and-only Dave Allen, Papi de la Babestation, the Doncaster de la Hoya, the White Rhino, an absolute diamond of a man. There can be few better people in British boxing. Thank you for giving up your time, sharing the ring and chessboard with me, the steak bake and making it such a memorable experience. Good luck for your fight on 13th October and hopefully see you there.[/p][p][br][/p][p]A huge thank you to everyone who has donated, shared the link, spread the word, sent messages of support or contributed in any other way. You are all amazing and I cannot thank you enough.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Of course, all of this was in aid of a very special person, Ben Crowther. Dave and I have a got special message for you which will be coming out on video soon. Keep smiling and keep inspiring, Ben, you're the bravest and biggest hero of all.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Four days after I took to the ring and chessboard, the fundraiser is STILL going strong and donations keep coming in! Thanks to the incredible generosity of others, the total now stands at 206% funded or £2065! My own fight and #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth may be over, but the fight against cancer is still ongoing for Ben, other children and their families who have likewise been affected. They need as much support as they can get.[/p][p][br][/p][p]I’m not hanging up my gloves anytime soon. This battle isn’t over yet and I hope you can join me. Please continue to donate, share, spread the word and don’t forget to #PassTheSmile :-)[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
