My story

[p]Project 565 Miles [/p][p]21st-24th May 2020 - Double GUCR145 (290 miles) [/p][p]24th-25th July 2020 - Kennet & Avon Canal 145 (145 miles)[/p][p]29th-30th August 2020 - Leeds & Liverpool Canal 130 (130 miles) [/p][p]In 2020 I will be aiming to complete the Canal Slam with a twist, as I plan to undertake a double GUCR145 this will start from the finish line in Little Venice, London and run up to Birmingham and then turnaround and join the official race and run back down to London all within 4 days. [/p][p]A month later I be towing the line at the Kennet & Avon Canal 145 miles ultra running from London to Bristol and the last race of the series will see me tackle the Leeds & Liverpool Canal 130 race. [/p][p]Over these 100 days I will have run 565 miles. [/p][p]The WHY is very simple, I will be raising funds for research into cancer specifically hepatocellular carcinoma at King's College Hospital (KCH) in London. At the end of June 2017 a fellow runner Mark Thornberry was diagnosed with type of terminal primary liver cancer and given 6 to 9 months to live.[/p][p]However Mark is determined not to go quietly into the night and as of today, following surgery at the start of 2019 to remove 50% of his liver, numerous other procedures and an experimental dual drug trial, Mark with the help of the guys Kings College Hospital, is still fighting a valiant battle.[/p][p]Unfortunately at the end of September additional secondary tumours were identified and there is a strong probability that Mark will no longer be eligible to continue the drug trial he is currently on and his prognosis is currently unknown.[/p][p]We should not just accept of the fact that liver cancer is currently only curable by transplant (and the vast majority of people are either detected too late for that or are qualified out by other criteria). The monies raised via this page will be deployed to enable research into the 'mechanics' of liver cancer, to further understand disease progression...and ultimately to help target more precise treatment pathways for patients...and that is just so uplifting. Mark blogged about this deployment here:[/p][p]https://thorners.wordpress.com/2019/01/29/show-me-the-money/[/p][p]By way of background...KCH is a leading NHS hospital and home to the well renowned Institute of Liver Studies and they know that liver cancer patients have very poor prognosis.[/p][p]All the team want to do to fix you completely or to get you more time, but in the majority of cases they can't, the treatment options for liver cancer patients are very limited and the research £s just aren't there (and I'm not going to get political here), I get the sense that NHS funding for critical illness is still massively triaged, let alone is it enough in relative terms. Not to mention The big Pharma companies have their own agendas and preferred target markets.[/p][p]Whilst Mark finds himself once again at the edge of a precipice, he has no intention giving up the fight...so the least I can do is help raise funds to help beat this complex cancer.[/p][p]Many Thanks Paul[/p][p]PS - if eligible, please don't forget to check the Gift Aid box![/p]
