My story

[p]Giving back to those who have given so much.[/p][p][br][/p][p]This year will see me take on my biggest and most iconic running challenge yet – the “Virgin London Marathon”. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Having tried for a number of years to secure a place, I feel both privileged for such a fantastic opportunity and also blessed to be healthy enough in both body and mind to take on such an incredible event. For these reasons, I would also like to use this time to help others by raising awareness (and hopefully some donations) for just one of the thousands of hardworking charities that support so many vital courses. Like so many charity fundraisers out there, my reasons for choosing to run in name of the “Baton Charity” have not been widely broadcasted but are extremely poignant and personal to me and my family so I thought I would share a few thoughts.[/p][p][br][/p][p]The “Baton Charity” was primarily set up for awareness. It carries a message of gratitude from those who wish to support the brave men and women of our armed forces who have, and do risk their lives so that we may live with freedom of choice, peace and safety. The Baton is a symbol of national conscience, crafted with care and respect from the handle of a stretcher – symbolising pride, hope, courage and suffering. The promotion, protection and rehabilitation of the health and well being of those who have been wounded or injured, physically or psychologically whilst serving in the armed forces sees grants to other charities which assist members and former members of the armed forces, and their dependents. It is recognised that we all have the freedom to object to war and our own beliefs but it should be remembered that as a nation we have chosen to have Armed Forces to defend our rights and this, along with my own family reasons is why I support them when they are asked to carry out their duties in the name of their country. Any funds donated are used for immediate (often emergency) support. No wages are paid and minimal expenses taken, just ordinary people doing what they can, simply because they care.[/p][p][br][/p][p]For those who may not have met me before, my name is Paula and I have now live in the wonderful town of Honiton, Devon for nearly 4 years. I am a proud mum of 2 fantastic young boys and loving wife to my wonderful husband, Adam. Following my further education studies into sport science, I have since dedicated my 22 year passion and career in Health and Fitness to helping others stay stronger, live longer and having fun at the same time! From GP referrals to cardiac rehabilitation, from personal training to just listening, my ultimate love and inspiration whilst encouraging others is seeing the motivations and improvements in those suffering from anxiety and mental health struggles. Physically seeing the growth in somebody’s self-confidence and taking on a happier and better life is an endearing outcome.[/p][p][br][/p][p]As a young couple and later as a family, we have covered the length and breadth of the country supporting one another throughout my husband’s 22 years career in the Army. As you can imagine the journey has brought me at times fear yet courage, weakness yet strength, love from so many amazing friendships and broadened my outlook on life. Most people have their own ways of managing and coping in difficult times. Personally, I told the boys we were on a “big adventure with lots to explore”. But through every situation I have always seen how keeping healthily in body and mind allows you to stay positive and clearly see what you can achieve whilst allowing you to appreciate the important things.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Though the sliding doors life my family and I have lived, I have seen first hand how charities such as the Baton have helped so many people through extremely sad circumstances. As my husband now nears the end of his military career, I can honestly say I feel like one of the lucky ones. Lucky to have such loving support, lucky to have made it through such worrying times and lucky to have the opportunity to pass on my feelings of pride for the efforts, professionalism and dedication whilst on active service. I feel that both the “challenge” and the “Baton” personally for me go hand-in-hand and every generous donation that you can pledge will help others in so many ways.[/p][p][br][/p][p]I feel that every step I take on my 26.2 mile journey will be a small, yet poignant token of my appreciation and gratitude. Giving back to the men and women and their dependants that have given so much is my inspiration for raising money for the “Baton Charity. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to my thoughts and for your continued support.[/p][p][br][/p][p]I hope I will do you all proud.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Paula [/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p]https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/PaulaFerris[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p] “From caring hand to caring hand, a stretcher handle from the battlefield carrying its message of conscience around the world, for our forces and their families across the ages”[/p][p][br][/p]
