Team story

[p]Hello![/p][p]I have been volunteering for Cocktails in Care Homes for about a year now and am a party manager at a care home in Bethnal Green. I have seen, first hand, the hugely positive effects the parties have on residents. I have made genuine and lasting connections with residents with advanced dementia. They may not remember by name, but we have a drink, a dance and a chat once per month and it means a lot to all of us. It's often about simply breaking the routine of a typical care home day. For example, the primary school across the road often bring a chicken called Marshmallow to the parties the residents absolutely love him! Especially Mary (check out the attached picture of her and Marshmallow).[/p][p]All donations are very much appreciated. We would love to keep the parties going for as long as possible.[/p][p]Thanks so much! Paul :) xox[/p][p][br][/p][p]Due to ill health, frailty and diminished energy, care home residents can’t pop down the pub or out to socialise with friends. Those whose families live far away might not have any visitors or even see anyone from outside the home for weeks at a time. Cocktails in Care Homes was set up in 2010 to change this. With a growing team of volunteers, Cocktails in Care Homes run monthly parties in sixteen London care homes.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Check out their homepage and video to get a better understanding of what it is they do![/p][p]https://magicme.co.uk/ [/p][p]------------------------------------------------------------------------[/p][p]“Magic Me has turned my life around, I want to get up in the morning and do things. I’ve got something to get up for.” Older participant[/p][p]“When you come, we know we are not forgotten.” Older participant[/p][p]“In a group like this, we learn from them, they learn from us.” Older participant[/p][p]“The residents have formed wonderful friendships at the parties, a resident who moved in a few months ago has saved a seat for his friend at every party!” – Care home staff member[/p][p]“Before you came we felt like nobody. Now we are somebody” Older resident[/p][p]“I discovered how we all see things differently sometimes” Participant feedback[/p][p]“A couple danced together all evening. They live apart - he lives here in the home because of his dementia. This party made it possible for them to dance together again.” Sara, volunteer[/p][p]“This is a real blessing. I go to many homes but I never see an atmosphere like this. A party like this makes such a difference. Normally I see lonely people sitting on their own” Visitor to a care home[/p][p]----------------------------------------------------------------------[/p][p]What will your money buy?[/p][p]? £10 buys table cloths, cocktail napkins and the all-important cocktail umbrellas for a party.[/p][p]? £25 buys a few bottles of wine to make Sangria in the summer or mulled wine in the winter, or range of beers for those party-goers who are not so sure about this fancy cocktail business![/p][p]? £50 buys a place on a 3-hour training session for one of our volunteer party managers to learn communication skills for working with those with dementia.[/p][p]? £100 keeps the bar stocked for 4 months, with everything we need to make Peach Bellinis or just a good old G&T.[/p]
