Team story

[p]Thank you for visiting our Paw Pals fundraising page! [/p][p]Paw Pals is a team of veterinary cardiologists and veterinary cardiology nurses comprising Heidi Ferasin, Luca Ferasin, Eoin Kilkenny and Vicki Cooper. We all work in private referral veterinary practice and have dedicated our years of training and our knowledge of and passion for our discipline to saving and improving the lives of countless dogs and cats with heart disease. Our team is completed by Susanna Cooper (Vicki's sister-in-law, who works in the cardiovascular pathology department at another large London hospital), Rob Cooper (Heidi's dad, a retired firefighter and proud grandfather) and Chris Tems (a colleague with advanced skills in small animal surgery and member of the management team working alongside Luca, Eoin and Vicki).[/p][p]On Friday 10th May 2019, we will each be completing a 160 ft (50 metre) abseil down the front of St. Thomas' Hospital in London to raise much-needed funds for The Children's Heart Fund at the adjacent Evelina London Children's Hospital. Most of us have never abseiled before. Some of us are seriously frightened of heights. One of us hates ropes! So this is a big deal and we are intentionally pushing ourselves to our limits to try and raise as much money as we possibly can for this fantastic hospital. [/p][p]Our link with Evelina is a very personal one which is close to our own hearts and has opened our eyes in spectacular fashion. In March 2015, Heidi and Luca's own son, Mattia, was born at St. Thomas' Hospital with multiple severe and life-threatening congenital cardiac defects, including a coarctation of the aorta, hypoplastic aorta, ventricular septal defect (VSD), persistent foramen ovale (PFO) and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). He spent his first few days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Special Care Baby Unit at St. Thomas' Hospital. The amazing team at the Evelina London Children's Hospital then stepped-in and Professor David Anderson performed over 7-hours of life-saving open heart surgery on precious little Mattia when he was just 6 days old. He then spent one week in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and Paediatric Cardiology (Savannah) Ward at Evelina London. He has been (and remains) under the care of the cardiology team at Evelina London ever since. [/p][p]During their stay at Evelina, Heidi and Luca got to know Dr. Caner Salih, a consultant paediatric cardiac surgeon and member of the team caring for Mattia. Dr. Salih had acquired a French Bulldog puppy called Büdu and became concerned when a heart murmur was detected during his first visit to the vet. He asked Luca to assess Büdu, who ironically diagnosed him with a ventricular septal defect (one of the multiple heart defects which had been successfully corrected during Mattia’s surgery). [/p][p]This experience has highlighted the remarkable similarities between paediatric and small animal medicine, not only in terms of medical conditions, diagnostic techniques and therapeutic procedures, but also in terms of the psychological, emotional and social importance of the human-animal bond – in both directions. After all, just like babies and young children, veterinary patients cannot communicate with us - while their ‘parents’ have the same need for reassurance that their beloved ‘baby’ will recover.[/p][p]Our veterinary hospital has formed a formal partnership with the Evelina London Children’s Hospital to celebrate these similarities and promote the concept of ‘One Health’ in a bid to advance both human and veterinary medicine. By working closely with the Evelina London, we aim to contribute positively to the development of novel techniques, research and therapies in both our children and in companion animals. Many people do not appreciate the amount of shared learning that has, for decades, occurred between the study of animals and medicine. Many of the advances in areas of human healthcare we embrace today simply could not exist without this relationship – and open heart surgery is one.[/p][p]Thanks to the wonderful staff at Evelina London, Mattia is a thriving, healthy and happy little boy. No words can ever express the gratitude that Heidi and Luca feel. We have been actively fundraising for Evelina London for the past three and a half years, and are continually searching for new ways to be able to give a little back and support other families and children facing the same situation. [/p][p]We would be very grateful if you could consider giving just a little something to this amazing children's hospital. Every little helps! Evelina London has multiple sub-specialities in addition to paediatric cardiology, but it is also the general children's hospital for South London. We are currently witnessing the NHS under huge financial strain to be able to continue to deliver the high-quality medical care our children deserve - it is up to us to give them any support we can.[/p][p]Thank you for your support![/p][p]Heidi, Luca, Eoin, Vicki, Susanna, Rob & Chris[/p][p][br][/p]
