Team story

[p]The Pedal for Parkinson's - Tour de Tim team is made up of Lytham Tennis Club members who have decided to raise much needed funds for research into Parkinson's, spurred on by their good friend and fellow tennis club member, Tim Hird, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's 4 years ago.[/p][p]The entirely self-funded challenge is to cycle from Whitehaven to Tynemouth and, with a couple of exceptions, we are not cyclists and so cycling 170 miles over effectively 3 days will be a challenge! [/p][p][br][/p][p]Here's Tim’s Story…….[/p][p]Back in 2013, I was healthy and happy playing golf, playing tennis, enjoying a few beers and living life to the full. Later that year I developed a slight tremor in my left arm that I initially put down to a trapped nerve. At the persistence of my wife, Debbie, and after much resistance (like most men!) I eventually gave in and visited my GP who referred me to a Neurologist at Royal Preston Hospital. After an initial consultation I was then sent for a brain scan and further tests. This was to establish if I was producing the correct level of dopamine, a chemical that Parkinson’s sufferers stop producing at the correct levels.[/p][p]In August 2014, I had a further consultation with the Neurologist when it was confirmed that I had Parkinson's! I came out of the consultation, Debbie was extremely upset, and I was left in shock. But, very quickly I realised that things could be much worse and that there were others at the hospital with far worse conditions. From that day on Debbie and I have kept things in perspective and although I've got Parkinson’s, Parkinson’s hasn't got me![/p][p]Yes, there are issues, I suffer really badly with stiff joints, I can shuffle when I get tired (or if I have had one too many!) and there are other symptoms too! But, I am lucky, I can still play golf and tennis and I always try to enjoy life to the full. [/p][p]Who knows what the future holds for me as the effectiveness of my treatment diminishes, but for now, I'll keep enjoying my life. I’ve just started learning stand-up paddle boarding and I’m really looking forward to the Coast to Coast fundraising cycle ride in October, organised by my good friends.[/p][p]The support I get from Debbie, my family and friends all helps me to remain positive and constantly reminds me that we get one chance, so make the most of it![/p][p]Tim[/p][p]Our ambition is to raise as much money as possible for Parkinson’s UK to support them in the important research to find a cure and provide support for those with this condition. Thank you for giving any money that you can afford to give![/p][p][br][/p]
