My story

[p]April 12th 2013.On this day my life changed in a split second whilst I was leading a ski team up a high valley in the Austrian Tyrol. The valley narrowed with a deep gorge on one side and snow covered cliffs on the other. A large avalanche advanced on the team and I just had time to shout a warning before being engulfed and swept over the edge of the gorge, hitting my head on the rocks below as I fell over 400 feet into an icy glacial river. My head was held above water by buoyancy in my rucksack but my body temperature quickly fell to 27 degrees in the icy water. I was airlifted out by an helicopter and taken to Innsbruck where surgeons restored my body temperature and operated to remove shards of skull from my brain. I remained on the edge of life for weeks in an induced coma. Eventually I was flown back to the UK to remain in hospital for nearly 2 years during which time I also had another life threatening fight, this time with cancer. [/p][p]Time has now passed and I have recovered sufficiently to know how lucky I have been and to be able to enjoy life again albeit very differently to my previous life as an Alpine Guide.[/p][p] My family have stood by me throughout this long and difficult period and my trainers and physiotherapists have supported me at every stage. It has been incredibly hard work but without this support I could not have made it. [/p][p]My passion now is cycling, something that I can do all year. Last year I totalled some 14,000km on my bike. My mission is now to support others via the Seashell Trust, a special needs children's school. The trust is a national charity supporting children and young adults with complex learning disabilities and additional communication needs from across the UK. It provides education and care from 2 to 25years.[/p][p] I am planning to join The Seashell Trust Cycle Switzerland Team in September and fund raising has already commenced. If you can help me to raise funds by donating I will be very grateful.[/p][p]Thank you[/p][p]Pete Rowlands [/p][p][br][/p]
