My story

[p]Our churches rank highly in the great architectural heritage of the country; yet they receive no grants to maintain their buildings. Costs rely entirely upon donations and fundraising, chiefly by their members. St Nicholas, Chislehurst, is fortunate in having sizeable congregations; but many of our country churches have tiny memberships, yet the same maintenance burden. The Ride & Stride event on 14th September will benefit both St Nicholas and those small churches (non-denominational) in the countryside. Please give generously; every £ will enable us to devote more resources to our mission work at home and overseas. You can enjoy the beauty of our medieval building, especially if you come on 21st/22cnd September, London Open House week-end, when you can also view our clock (Dent 1858) the first of its kind in the world and model for 'Big Ben's' clock. It is distinguished as it is still in its original condition![/p][p]This year I promised the churches in 'my' area that I would visit them all. This involved the high points of Kent starting at St Margaret's in Halstead; a black cat walked straight across my path just as we were about to start. Moving on to the 'sister' church of St Katherine's in Knockholt, leaning on a pew inside the church a black, furry, smaller thing nuzzled against my hand - the daughter of the tom in St Margaret's, it was explained! A very propitious start! [/p]
