My story

[p]I can never repay Butterwick for the help, care and support they gave my wife Mandy and family. On 21st/22nd June I cycled 29,902 feet (equivalent height of Mount Everest) to raise much needed funds for Butterwick; COVID-19 has drastically reduced their fundraising activities and impacted their vital services. My friends and colleagues from Northumbrian Water also formed a relay team and rode with me at the same time including: Mark Tully, Dan Jenkins, Paul Davison, Colin Burdon, James MacLean, Graeme Ridley, Andy Downer, Michael Stewart, Marc Reeves, Dave Horden and Stewart Clemenson.[/p][p]Mandy was diagnosed with terminal cancer and Butterwick provided counselling and end of life care which we'll be forever grateful for. Unfortunately Mandy lost her fight with the disease in 2017 but the Butterwick Hospice gave her love, care and dignity during this difficult time. They have continued to support my Son Alex and me with counselling which has been an enormous help for us to to rebuild our lives.[/p][p]Everesting involves riding up and down a hill until you reach the equivalent height of Everest, 29,000 feet or 8,848 M . The Relay Team and me successfully summited at Hartside Pass near Alston. Starting at 9pm on Sun night, we reached a height of 29,902 feet in approx. 22.5 hours and riding a total of 216 miles. The climb is approx. 5 miles in length which I had to repeat 22 times to reach the height of Everest (approximately 108 miles of climbing!). The most climbing I'd previously done in one day was 12,000 ft! [/p][p]I definitely wouldn't have reached the summit if it wasn't for my amazing team of sherpas who sheparded me up and down including through the darkness, fed, watered and cheered me on.[/p][p]Mandy's Mantra, during her short illness, was 'every cloud has a silver lining' as she looked for and focused on any positives which is a good lesson we can all do with at the moment.[/p][p]I was inspired to do the Everest Challenge after reading a book by the Mountaineer Joe Tasker who sadly lost his life with Pete Boardman near the summit of Everest in 1982. I'm honoured to had the Joe's Family support my challenge and they have also given me a photo of Joe in his climbing prime.[/p][p]I would like to thank Northumbrian Water, Lloyds Foundation and Axiom Engineering Associates and everyone else for their generous donations.[/p][p]Butterwick provides all of its services free of charge to patients and their loved ones. However, the support they freely give costs the Charity £10,000 a day. Through raising funds you are helping to add life to days when adding days to life is no longer possible. Please see link below for details of the amazing services and support that Butterwick provide:[/p][p]https://www.butterwick.org.uk/.[/p][p]Thank you for taking the time to read this story and please donate whatever you can, as all contributions will be gratefully accepted.[/p][p][br][/p]
