My story

[p]As the recent sunny weather has transformed our Cathedral and historic City into a delightful place to visit for so many tourists, pilgrims and inhabitants of Kent, it is easy to forget just how unforgiving the weather and frosty streets, porches and underpasses were during the harsh winter just past. [/p][p]Each morning, before the King’s School gets going, I walk my dogs up to Burgate for a run across the field and grass of St. Augustine’s and as we progress, a sense of just how tough it is for the rough sleepers, the vulnerably housed and the homeless in our City strikes me as I go past those in sleeping bags, or wrapped in cardboard and bags under the arches of the shops. Hence, the absolute importance of Catching Lives, with its hostel near Canterbury East train station (and charity bookshop in the crooked shop by Mint Yard Gate) and Porchlight, with its hostel specialising in looking after younger homeless people located on the Sturry Road. [/p][p]King’s has always done its bit - including the August when Peter Wells and I ‘slept rough’ in the Precincts to raise money and awareness - but I am now embarked upon a big fundraising drive for these really important and wonderful charities by running Le Marathon du Mont St Michel in Normandy the Saturday of Half Term (26th May). Please be generous in your support.[/p]
