My story
[p]Our story[/p][p]Thanks for visiting our Virgin Giving page, this page is created by Catherine and Peter Wells to enable us to raise money to support needy children in Kenya.[/p][p]As you may know we are both keen mountain walkers and this adventure enabled us to indulge our love of mountains whilst at the same time raising money for Karibuni Trust, a UK charity, supporting underprivileged children from the slums in Kenya.[/p][p]When one visits the shanty town of Kibera, near Nairobi, as we have, it has a profound effect. One and a quarter million people living in conditions we in other countries would consider totally unacceptable. As such, a visit leaves one changed, and demands a response.[/p][p]Karibuni Trust supports about 1200 children in 14 projects throughout Kenya, the largest being in Kibera, Nairobi. Its strapline is “Helping children from the streets and slums in Kenya”, and that is what it does, by ensuring that these children get an education and at least one meal a day. All of the children supported lack at least one parent, many are orphaned, many suffer from Aids and all come from the most disadvantaged sections of society.[/p][p]Our plan was to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, at nearly 6000 metres. We did our preparation and got ourselves as ready as we could. And now, we've done it - we both reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (Uhuru Peak) on August 1[sup]st[/sup]. It was a tremendous challenge and probably the hardest thing either of us have ever done. But we were climbing with a very friendly, helpful and supportive group and a team of guides and porters who were fantastic, and that, along with the prayers and support of the people back home, kept us going.[/p][p]Please visit the Karibuni website: http://www.karibuni.org.uk/ and find out more about how the charity transforms children’s lives in Kenya. [/p][p]And then, if you feel you can, please make a donation through this site to the Karibuni Trust. Quite simply, with more donations from people like you we can support even more children.[/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed directly to the Karibuni Trust. And if you prefer not to have your name and amount published, simply uncheck the box "I'd like my name to be shown ....."[/p][p]Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for your donations.[/p][p]Catherine and Peter[/p]
