Team story

[p]On September 8th this year, my Dad, Peter, and I are taking part in the Deloitte Ride Across Britain, cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for Parkinson's UK who are funding research into finding a cure for this disease. My Dad has Parkinson's and we're doing it on a tandem which equates to bravery and stupidity in almost equal measure. We'll be riding 969 miles in 9 days, crossing 23 counties and 3 countries as we go.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Dad was diagnosed in 2012, like his grandfather and mother before him. It's a crippling progressive neurological disease that is diagnosed in about 145,000 adults in the UK each year and for which THERE IS STILL NO CURE.There are more than 40 symptoms of Parkinson’s; as well as the most widely known symptom – tremor - these range from physical symptoms like muscle stiffness to depression, anxiety, hallucinations, memory problems and dementia, but it can affect people differently. In my dad's words:[/p][p]I was diagnosed with PD in 2012. The condition, slowly but relentlessly continues to take away my ability to, walk, talk, think, eat properly, sleep as well as many other symptoms. I was worried it would rob my wife of a husband she loved; my children of a father who was strong and healthy and my grandchildren of a granddad whom they could play with. It took away the desire to do many things...[/p][p][br][/p][p]Dad wasn't about to just sit around and wait for his tremors to get worse though. We soon learned how exercise is a vital component to maintaining balance, mobility and activities of daily living how and physical activity can improve many PD symptoms. So he got back on his bike. And so did I. On the same bike as it goes. In 2015 Dad and I did a triple ascent of legendary Tour de France climb Mont Ventoux in one day. That's more vertical climbing in one day than going from base camp to the summit of Everest and was by far and away the hardest day I've ever had on a bike. In the process we raised over ten thousand pounds for Parkinson's UK who provide support for PD sufferers and who are aggressively trying to find a cure for the disease.[/p][p]This challenge will be much harder. We'll be doing over a 100 miles a day and climbing the equivalent of two Everests so to that end, our aim is to raise twice as much money for Parkinson's UK. In Dad's words:[/p][p][br][/p][p]Life throws many difficulties at us and we must from adversity seek opportunity. We must push for better treatments to halt the progress of this horrible condition and soon find a cure. Sufferers of PD are still taking drugs that have been prescribed for over 50 years. Sometimes the side effects are just as bad as the symptoms.[/p][p]Enzo and I are hoping to raise £20,000 for Parkinson’s UK .This money will be used to help bring new better drugs to P.D sufferers quickly. Not in 10 years time but within a year or two. This is going to be my last challenge. I will give my all. [/p][p][br][/p][p]He's such a dude is my Dad[/p][p]Please give what you can so we can achieve our target, and give a better life back to PD sufferers and the people whose life they affect.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Peter and Enzo Cilenti[/p][p] [/p][p](The Tandem Warriors from Bradford) [/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
