My story

As a Patron, I am delighted to support this charity and its aim to fund medical research into finding a cure for spinal injuries; it was founded by David Nicholls after his 19 year old son Daniel was left paralysed following a swimming accident on Bondi Beach, Australia. Dan was on the fifth week of his GAP year and swam into a wave, hit a sandbank, breaking his spine. Having been told that his son would never be out of a wheelchair, David decided that he would set up the Foundation in the hope that one day Dan – and the thousands of people like him – would one day walk again. I will be walking the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation mile with Sophie Adam. Sophie is a 21 year old psychology student at Plymouth University. On 11th August last year she fell 25 feet off a high rope course and broke her neck. Sophie was taken to hospital and it was discovered that she had a compression fracture of C6 in my spine. At first they thought that she wouldn't need surgery but when she was propped up to take an x-ray, she fell too far forwards which put her spinal cord under threat. She then had a emergency operation to remove her broken C6 and replaced it with a metal cage between C5 and C7 to hold everything in place. She now has limited movement in her neck which can be quite painful at times but with physiotherapy, she’s improving. Sophie and I intend to raise awareness of the charity and hope you will donate to support research to help so many people with spinal cord injuries.

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
