My story

[p]~~Everyone meet Ollie!! 😁🌟❤?~~[/p][p][br][/p][p]***********[/p][p]~ Imagine a world without sight... now imagine a world without sound too...[/p][p]This is the reality facing children with Norrie Disease ~[/p][p]***********[/p][p][br][/p][p]So in October I will be running the Royal Parks Half Marathon with a group of others to raise money for The Norrie Disease Foundation. [/p][p][br][/p][p]I’d never even heard of ‘Norrie Disease’ until I met Ollie - who is one of the most inspirational little characters you will ever come across!! His massively limited vision meant that he wasn’t able to do school sports on a Wednesday afternoon so instead we started riding!! 😊🦄[/p][p][br][/p][p]Once a week we have a session and we are developing our own little system to overcome his sight issues!! As you can see in the video we have giant markers on a yellow background as this it the colour he can see most clearly, though even with his glasses on he cannot make them out until he is approximately 1m away. He remembers the markers and their position so that he has a little map in his mind and I work with him counting him down to his markers and helping to guide him across various lines in the arena. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Ollie is now walking and trotting solo, he has mastered his rising and I’m getting braver at stepping away and leaving him totally in charge 💪😉 Just occasionally when I’m walking or sometimes when I’m riding I close my eyes just to see what it’s like... if you haven’t tried it - do it (safely of course!!)!! It’s the most bizarre feeling, but my god does it make you appreciate how lucky we are to have our sight even if we don’t think it’s perfect!![/p][p][br][/p][p]Ollie’s vision is already pretty minimal, and there are other things that are likely to impact on him later too BUT if you met him you would never in a million years know!! He is the smartest, funniest and most positive little dude going 😁 Come rain or shine he cracks on with his riding and is a total inspiration!! 🙌 He is ridiculously quick witted and has the maturity of someone far older than his own 9 years!![/p][p][br][/p][p]Child health research is significantly underfunded, with only 5% of UK research funding spent on projects relating to child health. The Norrie Disease Foundation has formed a research partnership with Sparks and Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity on its 2019 National Call, which supports research projects addressing some of the most difficult and hard to treat childhood diseases, and aim to improve diagnosis and develop more effective and kinder treatments for children who desperately need them.[/p][p][br][/p][p]The Norrie Disease Foundation needs to raise £62,500 by February 2020 in order for the research project into preventing hearing loss for those affected by Norrie Disease to go ahead.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Inspire by Ollie, I’m going to run that half marathon!! 😬💪🏃?♀? Please, please, please DONATE to my fundraising campaign!!
