Team story

[p]As many of you will know, in December 2013 we were both involved in a ski accident while on a family ski holiday.[/p][p]We were skiing (far too fast) down a run with multiple small rollers taking off for a few feet and having a great time...until the moment we decided to swap phones to see if Pippa was skiing at the same speed as Freddie’s app was telling him![/p][p]We planned to go back down the same run but unbeknown to us there was quite a steep drop round the next corner (that we went round far too fast) rather than another roller which led to Pippa taking off first and Freddie hearing her screams and speeding up because he thought she was having a good time.[/p][p]Unbeknown to him Pippa had landed on her feet (and face) simultaneously and sent her poles and skis flying and was lying on the floor screaming in pain. He realised this soon after as he accidentally took off aswell.[/p][p]Freddie (aged 15) fell on landing but ran straight to help Pippa who was letting out some pretty impressive screams - having just completed his First aid training at school he quickly ask me what hurt, told me not to move and ran to get help! When I stopped screaming he even shouted at me to keep talking to him so he knew I was still conscious while he was trying to catch dads attention over the top of the next hill.[/p][p]On raising the alarm he ran back to make sure I was okay and only then realised he’d broken his shoulder.[/p][p]Next ensued 2 helicopters being called to rescue us both, taking us to separate hospitals on different sides of the country.[/p][p]Freddie was soon met in Visp hospital by our fabulous mum (who wasn’t skiing with us) having already explained what was wrong in German to the doctors and was ready to be discharged.[/p][p]Pippa in the meantime was at Bern’s specialist spinal trauma unit having what can only be described as a panic attack that mums lovely sallopettes were being cut off her (Carole has not yet forgiven her for this). CT scans revealed than on landing on her feet the compression forces had caused the body of her L3 vertebra to effectively snap off.[/p][p]The next day Pippa had surgery placing 4 screws and 2 rods in her spine to stabilise the fracture and spent a further week in hospital before having a nurse fly out from the UK to take her home (along with ambulances to and from the airports). Fortunately other than pins and needles in one leg for a few months she has suffered no long term spinal injury as a result of this but we both realise how incredibly lucky we both were in this situation.[/p][p]In light of this, we have chosen to run the 2019 London Marathon in aid of Spinal Research. Every day, 3 people in the UK become paralysed as a result of spinal cord injuries, thereby losing their independence to even do simple day to day tasks. Money raised for Spinal Research is used to fund new research and clinical treatments, including research to transform the lives of paralysed people by restoring their movement and feeling. Alongside this, funding goes towards advancing treatments for diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, stroke, dementia and motor neurone disease.[/p][p][br][/p]
