Team story

[p]Please support us in raising £20k to fund the construction of toilets and a kitchen at the Auro Technical School in Pajwenda, Uganda![/p][p]What is Project CARE?[/p][p]Project CARE is the international volunteering programme arm of the charity, CAREducation Trust, and facilitates group volunteering trips to schools in India supported by CAREducation Trust. [/p][p]Project CARE was founded in 2012 and has, since it started, facilitated trips for over 100 students from Warwick and Nottingham Universities, raising approximately £100,000 for educational projects in deprived areas in India and parts of Africa.[/p][p]The Project CARE committee comprises Darpit, Riya, Shiv, Meera and Sachin and the committee is responsible for coordinating the annual trips.[/p][p]What is the Auro Technical School?[/p][p]The Auro Technical School is a vocational college located in Pajwenda, a rural part of eastern Uganda, near Tororo town.[/p][p]The school provides local youth with an opportunity to access vocational training, and currently provides courses to over 140 students in hairdressing, tailoring, bricklaying and carpentry.[/p][p]The school plays a fundamental role for the students, giving them the ability to earn an income to support themselves and their families. It also gives them skills which they can apply in their local communities – for example, many of the bricklaying students have used the skills they’ve developed at the school to build modest homes for their families![/p][p]This November, we (Darpit, Riya, Shiv and Meera) spent a week volunteering at the school.[/p][p]We spent our time at the school facilitating employability workshops, where we helped over 80 students to write their first ever CV. We also helped develop their presentation skills in preparation for upcoming job interviews, and chaired debates on topical issues.[/p][p]We had the opportunity to visit the homes of the students and staff members to get a first-hand account of the positive impact the school has been making, and also planted fruit trees around the village to contribute towards the local fresh produce levels and a more sustainable environment.[/p][p]What are we raising money for?[/p][p]Following our visit, we have collectively decided to raise funds to construct the school‘s kitchen and toilets, costing circa £11,000 and £9,000 respectively.[/p][p]At present, the school's toilet and kitchen facilities are extremely poor and do not meet the local health and safety requirements! For example, the kitchen is a temporary hut with a man-made fire where food is cooked for over 140 students daily.[/p][p]We strongly believe that sanitation and food hygiene is a basic human right and that by constructing satisfactory toilet and kitchen facilities, we will transform the school. Not only will it help prevent the spread of diseases, it will allow the school to be registered with the local district (which is not possible without meeting minimum hygiene requirements).[/p][p]The kitchen will also enable the school to offer catering classes as a new vocational course, opening up the school to a wider cohort, as well as host community events in order to raise vital income for the school. [/p][p]Where will your donations go?[/p][p]Unlike many charities where donations may in part go towards administration costs, expenses or salaries, CARE covers all personal expenses themselves and do not make any deductions from your donations. This means that, other than any fees charged by Virgin for hosting this page, your ENTIRE donation will go towards the direct construction costs of the toilet and kitchen at the school.[/p][p]Have any questions or want to learn more? [/p][p]If you have any questions or if you are interested in learning more about this project or Project CARE’s volunteering opportunities, please see our website https://www.careducation.org/get-involved/project-care/ or contact us at projectcare@careducation.org and we’d be delighted to discuss with you![/p][p]Thank you for your support and we look forward to sharing further construction developments with you![/p][p]Darpit, Riya, Shiv & Meera [/p]
