Team story

[p]This holiday period, the Green Mary student sustainability group are calling on the wider student and staff community at Queen Mary to consider donating unwanted food, some spare change or their time to support the work of Bow Foodbank. [/p][p]About Bow Foodbank[/p][p]Bow Foodbank, currently based at the Bromley-by-Bow Centre, is an independent foodbank started in 2014 through the work of multiple faith and community groups. It is a secular, volunteer run organisation meaning overheads are at a minimum and all donations go straight to those in need. The organisation's main goal is to act as immediate support to those undergoing a sudden change of circumstance, or to provide intermediary support to those on the waiting list for more long-term assistance.[/p][p]Why is your help needed?[/p][p]The foodbank now sees 8x as many clients weekly as they did pre-COVID 19. Many of these are new users who have never used a foodbank before, and whose circumstances have changed suddenly as a result of the pandemic. Each week the foodbank feeds over 2100 people, around 1500 of whom are children. As a result weekly costs have increased from £2,000 to an estimated £16,000, which current funding levels will be unable to sustain. [/p][p]As an independent foodbank, the central ethos of Bow Foodbank is trust and respect; they do not ask clients for any personal information or any demographic questions or for referral from other support services, as many others do. However, as an independent foodbank, they have not previously received Government funding, only doing so this year due to increased demand. [/p][p]What could my donation do?[/p][p]In order to secure Bow Foodbank's future into the New Year, they are aiming to raise £240,000 in 4 months, more than 3 times the entire total expenditure last year. They are in the process of applying for larger foundation, corporate and government grants but this process can be slow whilst money rapidly continues to be used up. [/p][p]As an indication of how far donations can go, a family bag containing the ingredients for approx. 20 healthy, balanced and varied meals costs £20-25.[/p][p]How to get involved[/p][p]There are 3 ways you can get involved with the appeal;[/p][p]1) Drop off some food donations at any of the campus donation points between Monday 23rd Nov and Wed 9th Dec. See poster below for full list. [/p][p]2) Donate to this fundraiser if you feel you are able. This could perhaps be the cost of a couple of items you would otherwise drop off.[/p][p]3) Volunteer at the Foodbank. The Students' Union arranges regular opportunities for students to help out. Please contact su-volunteering@qmul.ac.uk to find out more. Staff are able to approach the Foodbank directly. [/p][p]Get in Touch[/p][p]If you have any questions about this campaign or would like to get involved with collecting food donations on campus or within your student/staff group please get in touch with Tom Stockton the Students' Union Sustainability Coordinator (t.stockton@qmul.ac.uk) [/p]
