Team story

[p]THIS IS THE OFFICIAL TEAM FUND RAISING PAGE FOR RFTS19 FOR MOOR HOUSE SCHOOL AND COLLEGE[/p][p]A few words from Matthew Kirkby and Peter Irvine[/p][p]We are both turning 50 in 2019, difficult to believe based on our youthful good looks we know![/p][p]We want to do something that’s a bit of a challenge, raise some money for charity and hopefully have some fun with some mates and friends along the way - which we have now nearly 70 of you joining![/p][p]So here’s what what has been planned!![/p][p]As some of you will know (at least half of the facts anyway!) Matthew has a house in the south of France and Peter has a daughter, Sophie, with special educational needs who has benefitted significantly from attending a specialist school, Moor House School & College in Oxted, Surrey (www.moorhouse.surrey.sch.uk). We both like cycling and we both like wine. We have decided to combine all of this and spend 14 days cycling from Le Rouret (just outside Nice) to hopefully! Oxted[/p][p]This will involve:-[/p][p]- 1730+ km [/p][p]- 21,800m vertical (that is two and half times Everest!)[/p][p]- 3 of the toughest climbs of the Tour de France[/p][p]- a journey through the wine areas of the Rhône, Jura, Champagne and (don’t laugh) Kent?[/p][p][/p][p][br][/p][p]?We have set ourselves a target of raising £100,000 to be split between Sophie’s school and Macmillan cancer support. [/p][p]Each stage begins and ends with a celebration wine dinner in some of the great wine regions in the world[/p][p][/p][p]?Personal message from Peter: [/p][p][br][/p][p]"Moor House School & College is the school where my daughter Sophie has attended since she was 8 years old. Since birth, Sophie has had a very severe Speech & Language disability, but with the specialist education and support that Moor House provides, Julia and I have marvelled at how she has developed into a bright, articulate, independent, loud and stroppy teenager, something we never thought possible before she started at Moor House. Because of this, I want to do my bit in raising funds to help Moor House to continue to invest and expand in its capabilities to provide specialist education and support for Children like Sophie. " [/p][p]?Please help me make a difference by sponsoring the team on this amazing adventure![/p][p][br][/p][p]Moor House School & College[/p][p]Building the Future for Young People with Speech and Language Disabilities[/p][p]Moor House School & College is an outstanding school and college and internationally recognised centre of excellence in rural Surrey, leading in education and research for children with Developmental Language Disorder[/p][p]Consistently rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, Moor House School & College provides education, care and therapy for children and young people aged 7-19 with severe and complex speech and language disability, known as Developmental Language Disorder, DLD. Moor House is a non-maintained special school and charity where places are funded by Local Authorities. Moor House provides both day and residential places for students in the local area of Surrey and across the UK. [/p][p]The Moor House approach is for students to be empowered to reach their potential in classroom learning and independence, and to develop communication skills, friendships and self-belief. We offer a highly specialist, safe, caring and stimulating learning environment. Teachers understand each student’s needs and therapy is embedded within the curriculum.[/p][p]The Moor House Therapy Department continues to be at the forefront of research into the effectiveness of therapy interventions for school aged students with severe Developmental Language Disorder. This ensures the work we do with students is driven by the most current evidence through the Moor House Research and Training Institute, part of Moor House School & College. MHRTI leads internationally respected research into the interventions for children with DLD, provides specialist and bespoke training for professionals, and resources including apps and online tools for professionals and schools working with children with DLD and other special educational needs. [/p][p]Our vision is of a society where speech and language disabilities do not prevent a young person from achieving his or her learning and communication potential, building an independent life and contributing positively to society. Principal, Helen Middleton.[/p][p]Funds raised for Moor House will go toward the following project:[/p][p]This fundraising initiative will enable us to significantly enhance the teaching environment and improve the outcomes for students wishing to study Pottery and DT. We anticipate the project to replace both classrooms will cost in the region of £300,000 and will be completed in the Autumn 2019.”[/p]
