Team story

[p]Hi, thanks for visiting our page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p][p]2013-12-16[/p][p][span=color: #ff0000;]Launch of Campaign[/span][/p][p]After successfully ascending Mount Kilimanjaro for a personal challenge in July 2013 I can first hand say that it is the hardest thing I have ever done. Why am I about to do it again you are probably thinking? because my philosophy is just because something is really difficult does not mean it can't or won't be done. No matter how difficult this challenge will be in February 2014 it will not even come close to the strength physically and mentally that some veterans have had to endure. [/p][p]My son Luke Redmond is in the army, currently serving with the Joint Helicopter Support Squadron. It is Luke that introduced me to the charity BLESMA - Britains Limbless Ex Service Men's Association. Their mission being to enable limbless veterans to lead independent and fulfilling lives. [/p][p]It is with pride that Luke, Joe Redmond and I that we will be committed to completing this challenge and raising as much money as possible. Thank you for your support and donation, it means a lot to us and all those at BLESMA.[/p][p]"The harder you fall, the heavier you heart; the heavier your heart, the stronger you climb, the higher your pedistal." by Criss Jami[/p][p][lt]img style="vertical-align: baseline;" title="RTS-Climb Kilimanjaro" src="https://scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/t1/1621830_719371744748151_26171571_n.png" alt="RTS- Kilimanjaro Climb to raise funds for BLESMA" width="300" height="388" /[gt][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][span=font-weight: normal;]2014-02-11[/span][/p][lt]h3[gt][b][span=text-decoration: underline;]Day of Departure Looming[/span][/b][lt]/h3[gt][p][span=color: #ff0000;][b]Team RTS-Kilimanjaro are leaving tonight for their challenge. A little rushed trying to get all work sorted out before packing and then off[/b]![/span][/p][p]Today has seen a great cash boost to the fundraising from those that prefer not to participate on the online donation option.[/p][p]Crossways Recycling has charged in with raising almost £1,000.[/p][p]Thankyou to all of you for your generous donations both on and ofline, they are all greatly appreciated. [/p][p]Good luck with the outward journey. Next update will be on how the climb is progressing, hopefully some photos will be posted on this page or you can follow us on twitter @Rtswaste or Like our facebook page.[/p][p][/p][p]2014-02-17[/p][lt]h3[gt][b][span=text-decoration: underline;]The Ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro[/span][/b][lt]/h3[gt][p]Mark Redmond has made contact and reports the following.[/p][p]We arrived in Kilimanjaro on Friday 14th February with a  3 hour delay at Nigeria. There was a briefing meeting that evening before preparing for the first day of the climb.[/p][p]08:30 local time (05:30 GMT) the CLIMB began. Slow and steady is the best advice from our Sherpa. The first day we saw plenty of thunder and lightening. This made the climb a little more tricky with having to wear our wet gear. At the end of the first day we made Shira 2 Camp.[/p][p]Day 2 we have made it to Barranco Camp. All going well so far. [/p][p][lt]img src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/t1/1904082_732292990122693_938374289_n.jpg" alt="Kilimanjaro Camp Map" width="400" height="291" /[gt][/p][p]2014-02-18[/p][lt]h3[gt][span=text-decoration: underline;]Karanga Camp[/span][lt]/h3[gt][p]Mark, Joe and Luke have had another tough day. Currently at Karanga Camp. Normally highly recommended fro scenic value and opportunies to rest and acclimatisation before the ascent to the peak. The following message came through:[/p][p]"The heaven has opend up with hale and rain, although no thunder and lightening today. The temperature has dropped to -10 and all our gear is soaked. I have a river running under my tent. Not pleasant and this is supposed to be the best time of year!"[/p][p]All for a good cause though. Thank you for your support. [/p][p]2014-02-20[/p][lt]h3[gt][b][span=text-decoration: underline;]Reaching Great Heights "The SUMMIT"[/span][/b][lt]/h3[gt][p]After a gruelling battle with extreme elemnets of wind and rain at temperatures of -12 the summit was accomplaished by all three of our men. The peak was shrouded in a cloud.  However the return that night to Camp Millennium into a cosy slleping bag after a message was sent saying they were absolutely shattered.[/p][p]2014-02-27[/p][lt]h3[gt][b][span=text-decoration: underline;]Some photos from Luke[/span][/b][lt]/h3[gt][p]Taken along the way of our challenge.
