My story

[p]Hi, thanks for visiting my page.[/p][p]It’s been a long held belief of mine that sport plays a positive role in the make-up of a child. Team-work, taking instructions, learning, making mistakes, handling pressure, winning (with humility), losing (with grace), mixing with others outside of one’s social group and many more. In one word, “life-skills” … and sport is also about having FUN.[/p][p]Many families understand this and are able to give their children sporting opportunities. They have or make time and the have the necessary finance to support their child in this regard.[/p][p]Kids from dysfunctional families or kids from families that struggle daily to keep their heads above water – they don’t have these opportunities. And these are the kids that most need a leg-up, the life-skills, the confidence and the skill-set to reach their potential in life.[/p][p]Why am I telling you this? Ulterior motive? Ahem - well yes, sort of ….[/p][p]In April 2015, I’ll be running the Virgin London Marathon. This is my first marathon – likely my last too. I ought to run for a charity. It doesn’t feel right not to do so.[/p][p]I was lucky enough to win a ballot place, which means I’m not bound to any charity or on the hook to raise a specific amount.[/p][p]Selfishly, I also need something to push me. At 20miles (hitting the wall), I’ll likely question why the heck I’m putting myself through this pain – not to mention the 6am training runs on Saturday mornings – I don’t do cold very well.[/p][p]I consider myself fortunate to not have had to deal with a personal tragedy – that would make my charity choice more obvious. So here is my thought process. Given the above, my criteria for choosing a charity in priority order:[/p][ul][li]Something to do with kids[/li][li]Sport[/li][li]A charity with broad appeal – not regional nor specific to any particular community[/li][li]Not a main-stream charity – they all do wonderful work, but already get lots of support[/li][/ul][p]So, I’m choosing to run for Youth Sport Trust - www.youthsporttrust.org. In their own words, “Our projects try and target young people who have not been given the same PE and sport opportunities as other young people of their age, working with a number of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and in deprived areas.”[/p][p]This donation page helps me with the admin of collecting money. Counting on all you good people to donate to YST.[/p][p]I’m keeping a blog to share my progress over the coming months. You can find this at https://rajvarshani.wordpress.com/[/p][p]I’ve taken lots of advice from lots of people – running folks at CSR, MetrosRC club runners, forums, books – the blog is a way to give something back .…[/p][p]Through this page (Virgin Money Giving), you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.[/p][p]I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
