Team story

[p]The Ride[/p][p]In July 2021, the Rawhides aim to ride 800 miles in 8 days (with a fair few hills along the way) from the Scottish Highlands to Wiltshire in memory of Artemis Alice Wood, raising awareness & funds for The Royal Marsden and The Institute of Cancer Research.[/p][p][br][/p][p]‘Riding 4 Artemis’ will take the team from Durness down the West Coast of Scotland, past Ullapool and then back inland towards Inverness. From there, we will cycle to Fort William and past Glasgow into Ayr. On crossing the border back into England, we will make our way to Penrith, taking in the Yorkshire Dales before moving onto the Peak District. The final legs (and we will be on final legs by then!) will be onto Oxfordshire and Wiltshire. If all that was not enough, due to the slowdown of C-19 restrictions easing, we will have to be C-19 regulations compliant meaning some accommodation through tents, split pelotons, social distancing and masks.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Please follow our progress (and pain) on Instagram at #fundraising4artemis[/p][p][br][/p][p]The Team[/p][p]We are a bunch of friends who enjoy getting out on our bikes together. Despite our obvious middle age physical limitations (and we're not just talking love handles, here), no challenge or feat is too great for us (to attempt) in the name of a good cause.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Those who will try to shrug off their tummies in completing this challenge are Jody Wood; Henry Syrett; Ben Thomson; George McFerran; Hamish Laing; George Finch; Theo Backhouse; Toby Dean; Matthew Law; Robert Nelson; Charlie Sichel; Neil Laventure; Andrew Pannell and Nicholas Wells.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Artemis Alice Wood[/p][p]The charity monies are being raised in memory of Artemis Alice Wood, youngest daughter of Jody and Juliana Wood, who tragically died from Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukaemia (JMML). JMML is a rare form of myelodysplasia but has some characteristics of Leukaemia. Artemis was diagnosed at Southampton University Hospital and treated at The Royal Marsden and St George’s Hospital, Tooting.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Artemis successfully underwent a stem cell transplant at The Oak Centre For Children and Young People at The Royal Marsden in September 2019. Matilda, her brave big sister, provided the stem cells. Whilst the transplant was successful, the side effects of the chemotherapy and transplant were too much for Artemis’ little body to bear. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Despite her courage and the herculean efforts of the doctors, nurses and other staff who looked after her, Artemis died on 27 November 2019, a dark day for all that were lucky enough to know such a bright, fun, naughty, beautiful, brave and strong willed little girl.[/p][p][br][/p][p]The Fundraise[/p][p]The monies which the Rawhides team hopes to raise will be split between The Royal Marsden and the Institute of Cancer Research, both of whom support Professor Mel Greaves’ research into the causes and treatment of Leukaemias (including JMML).[/p][p][br][/p][p]Thank you![/p][p]The nature of this challenge means that we will suffer on this ride. How much will also depend on the weather. Our suffering is by design, to show solidarity with Artemis, who also suffered. Please show YOUR support for our suffering, and far more importantly, the suffering endured by other children with Leukaemias, by generously supporting this challenge. The team appreciates it so much and we thank you.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Finally, please may we also take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported and contributed to the Ride 4 Artemis in other ways. They are too numerous to name, but include our corporate sponsors (Reed Smith LLP; Javelin Global Commodities; Backhouse Housing; Webber Chase; Ralph Lauren; Lion Brewery; O&3; Condor Cycles and Hammer Nutrition) and many others who have done everything from squiggling the designs on our shirts, to offering us a bed and hot meal en route through the UK, to running our PR/Insta campaign, to cutting the wonderful video of why we are riding, and so much more. We are grateful for all of the support and we hope we will do you proud.[/p]
