Team story

*** STOP PRESS*** In order to get fit and help raise awareness of global warming in Antarctica at the same time the ReQuest2021 team have set up another seemingly “impossible” challenge. Over a duration of 8 months the aim is to grow the ReQuest2021 Rowing Team to a level where we can all jointly complete a full Circumnavigation Of Antarctica. We are using the Saildrone project for inspiration.Back on 3rd August, 2019, an unmanned Saildrone 1020 completed a 13,670-mile journey around Antarctica in search of carbon dioxide. It was world’s first autonomous circumnavigation of Antarctica. The saildrone collected and transmited a range of data on weather, seal and krill populations, and levels of carbon dioxide, CO2, in the air and water.Until recently, scientists assumed that the Southern Ocean steadily absorbed large volumes of CO2 from the atmosphere — a big contributor to the entire ocean’s uptake of up to 40 percent of the greenhouse gases driving global warming. However, scientists also knew shifts in winds and circulation around Antarctica could alter CO2 uptake from the atmosphere, and recent measurements from instrumented Argo floats showed that under certain conditions the Southern Ocean could emit CO2 instead of absorbing it.(Source: www.noaa.gov/news/saildrone-is-first-to-circumnavigate-antarctica-in-search-for-carbon-dioxide)[p]The original James Caird sponsored Row-A-Thon had a launch event with two high profile rowing machines either side of Shackleton's famous James Caird lifeboat and lots of other rowers participating simultaneously on rowing machines all over the world. They clocked up 1500km (the equivalent of 800 nautical miles) - the amazing distance covered on the Endurance expedition's incredible boat journey, by the end of April 2021.[/p][p]We invite professional and amateur rowers around the world to join the team on their Antarctic rowing challenges and raise some sponsorship.[/p][p]A partnership project between Kent Scouts, The James Caird Society and Dulwich College.[/p][p]REGISTER TO ROW: https://www.cognitoforms.com/SpectuliseLtd/JamesCairdRowAThon[/p][p]All profits go to the Kent Scouts ReQuest2021 Antarctic Research Project.[/p][p][Kent County Scout Council.
