[p]WALK FOR REFUGEES AT THE READING LEGAL WALK[/p][p]Join us at the Reading Legal Walk and give a lifeline to Refugees in Berkshire.[/p][p]The Reading Legal Walk is a 10km walk to raise money for free legal advice services in and around Reading.[/p][p]Our team so far is :- Jonjo Warrick, Nick Harborne, Flora Roshi, Caroline Gratix, Alison McQuitty, Alice Mpofu-Coles, Rosie Adey, Rosie Cunningham, Bet Tickner, Anom Ahmad, Ian Caren, Mary Riall, Caitlin O'Connor, Fiona Dempsey, Yvonne Newton, Lisa Waite, Francis O'Neill, Jessica Philbrick, Emily Lloyd, Melanie Wilkes, Emily Wilkes, Dylan Wilkes, Amy Wilkes, Anna Waite, Jude Haste, Liz Holton, Scott Ingleton[/p][p]Last year, we gave over 151 Refugee families and individuals hundreds of hours of free legal advice and practical support that they cannot access elsewhere.[/p][p]We rely entirely on donations to continue this vital service for Refugee men, women and children in Berkshire.[/p][p]Raise Money. Walk the 10km. Give a lifeline to Refugees in Berkshire.[/p][p]---------------------------------[/p][p]WALK WITH US[/p][p]If you want to join the team, please email jonjo@rrsg.org.uk and we'll sign you up and get you fundraising.[/p][p]We're asking walkers to try and raise £250 - roughly the cost of 8 hours of legal advice for a Refugee family.[/p][p]We'll provide posters, images for emails & social media, and can give you lots of ideas to help you raise the money.[/p][p]If you know anyone who would like to join us for the walk, sign them up![/p][p]-------------------------------[/p][p]JOIN US ONLINE[/p][p]If you can't walk with us in person, you can join us online and walk 10km in or near your home.[/p][p]------------------------------[/p][p]READING REFUGEE SUPPORT GROUP[/p][p]We've been helping Refugees and people seeking asylum to rebuild their lives in Berkshire for over 25 years. We support Refugees from more than 50 countries, who have escaped war, persecution, environmental catastrophe, famine and modern slavery. Many have been victims of human trafficking and some have No Recourse to Public Funds.[/p][p]We offer free, OISC-certified legal advice; practical help; English classes; a safe space; social activities; and help accessing education and finding work. We also run a Homework Club for Schoolkids and a Refugee football team, Sanctuary Strikers F.C.[/p][p]Join us on Wed 16th September to walk 10km and raise funds for Refugees living in Berkshire.[/p][p]--------------------------------[/p][p]LAYLA'S STORY[/p][p]Layla* fled from Afghanistan when Russia invaded and fled to Pakistan with her husband. Over the next few years Layla gave birth to four children.[/p][p]After each birth she was beaten by her husband, her brothers in law and her mother-in-law for not having given birth to a son.[/p][p]After the fourth girl was born her husband divorced her and moved to Europe where he remarried. Her brothers in-law were part of the Taliban and returned to Afghanistan telling her they would kill her if she ever returned to her old home.[/p][p]Layla somehow fled to the UK. She has huge mental health support needs and has been staying with Remi for 2 yrs. Remi couldn’t get any help from the Local Authority or social services because Layla has no recourse to public funding. Remi has her own family and can no longer cope with looking after Layla by herself. Remi finally brought Layla to us in desperation.[/p][p]RRSG volunteers started communicating with the Home Office in April 2018, seeking asylum for her, explaining previous circumstances and that Layla could not read, write or speak English and RRSG was acting for her.[/p][p]The Home Office did not respond to RRSG but wrote to Layla directly in English.[/p][p]In May the Home Office, ignoring medical advice from her doctor, turned up to relocate Layla, giving RRSG 1 days’ notice. We managed to get this over-turned after about 200 phone calls.[/p][p]In June, after continuing to ignore our efforts to communicate the Home Office tried to rehouse Layla away from all her support again and against medical advice.[/p][p]In desperation RRSG threatened the Home Office with legal action.[/p][p]After months of no communication from the Home Office, they were suddenly able to respond to the threat of legal action within 10 mins![/p][p]In August 2018, we finally succeeded in getting Layla into the supported accommodation that she had been legally entitled to at least 5 months (if not 2 years) before. It has taken huge amounts of staff time just to help this one person.[/p][p]Last year, we supported over 151 individuals and families like Layla[/p][p]*Names have been changed to protect anonymity.[/p][p]We rely on donations and fundraising to continue this vital work.[/p][p]Please give as generously as you can.[/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
