My story

[p]We did it! Thank you to everyone who sponsored us![/p][p][br][/p][p]I'm walking the virtual Marathon in October to raise money for the fantastic Headway Surrey who have been working tirelessly over the last year to support our clients with Acquired Brain Injury. [/p][p]I'm frequently bowled away by how brave and determined our clients are - they acquired their brain injuries by sporting accidents, cycling or car accidents, strokes, or simply taking a fall. The youngest client I've met at one of our session was in his 20s and had taken a bad fall while on gap year travels that would affect him for the rest of his life. Their brain injury can affect their memory, their sight, their speech, their organisational skills, even their temperament. I hope that I can be even a little bit as determined as them as I face just over 26 miles, which is about double what I can comfortably walk at the start of 2021![/p][p]Headway Surrey is an independent registered charity which supports people in Surrey with acquired brain injury (ABI), including traumatic brain injury, over the age of 18, and their families and carers. Providing bespoke cognitive rehabilitation programs to re-learn everyday executive skills that we all take for granted at the centre, community hub, online or at home. [/p][p]Specialising in memory skills, organisation, planning, prioritising, flexible thinking, decision making, writing, spelling, emotional behaviour, social and behavioural skills. Acquired brain injury can be a result of a stroke, heart attack, brain tumour, road traffic incident, sports injury, work accident, falls, trips, victim of assault, encephalitis, meningitis, lack of oxygen (hypoxia), drowning, carbon monoxide poisoning, hydrocephalus, Covid-19 and other issues.[/p][p]Headway Surrey supports families, carers, employers and others connected with the survivor with rehabilitation, education, advice and support. Headway Surrey raises awareness of brain injury with the general public and about their services.[/p]
