My story

[p]FOP Friends is the only UK charity that aims to raise awareness and funds for the cruel disease that is FOP. FOP (Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva) is one of the rarest, most debilitating conditions known to medicine, where muscles, tendons and ligaments turn to bone, progressively restricting movement and eventually imprisoning the body in a second skeleton. There’s currently no effective treatment, or a cure, and the average life expectancy is only 40 years old. [/p][p]I have only known about this condition since 2014 when my friend's daughter, Isla was diagnosed at just three months old. Each year I set myself a new challenge to raise much needed funds. I am lucky enough to have been selected for a charity place in the London Marathon 2020 by FOP Friends. This will be my first ever marathon! [/p][p]Every single penny raised will go towards funding FOP medical research, including the maintenance of the wonderful FOP research team at Oxford University, and supporting all the UK FOP families. [/p][p]Finding a cure for FOP is only the tip of the iceberg. Research into FOP is linked to burns, sporting injuries, heart disease, joint replacement, osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, anaemia, childhood brain cancer and heterotopic ossification. Your donation could change the lives of millions of people. [/p][p]While there is no effective treatment or a cure for FOP at this present moment, the FOP community still have a lot of hope, as there are currently two global clinical trials, and more are being planned. [/p][p]We need to continue raising funds and awareness, so that FOP medical advances can continue, and all FOP children can go on to live limitless, independent lives, free from this cruel disease. [/p][p]Please support me if you can by donating, partaking in one of my fundraising ideas or joining me on a training run or two! [/p][p]Thank you, [/p][p]Becky xx[/p][p]Training [/p][p]8th December 2019 - Milton Keynes Winter Half Marathon 1:53:09 [/p]
