My story

[p]Update - April 8th 2018 - Richard completed the marathon in 3 hours 59 minutes and 52 seconds!!! [/p][p]I have always said that if I was to run another marathon (my last was in Belfast 2004), it was going to be somewhere either extreme or a bit out of the ordinary. So where else but North Korea and on April 8th I am taking to the streets of Pyongyang to attempt to run the 26.2 miles for two very worthy charities, the Ebony Horse Club and the Injured Jockeys Fund.[/p][p]As with any long distance run it has involved a lot of training over the past three months that culminated in a 20 miler in Manchester recently. I am hoping it has been enough.[/p][p]About the Charities[/p][p]Ebony Horse Club[/p][p]Ebony Horse Club is a Brixton based charity that works with local young people, teaching them riding, horse care and providing dedicated youth services. Since 1996 we have helped raise aspirations, education, life skills and well-being of our local children many of whom face complex challenges growing up in a rapidly changing urban environment. Situated in one of the most deprived areas in the country our riding centre teaches 400 children and young people a year to learn to ride and look after horses. Finding refuge, our Brixton riders build trust, work as a team and demonstrate resilience, supported by the most natural and patient of teachers, our horses. We are extremely proud to see our young riders progress in their abilities with our horses, as well as growing into responsible young adults and often moving on to further education or careers in the equine world.[/p][p]To learn more about our work or give your support please visit: www.ebonyhorseclub.org.uk[/p][p]Injured Jockeys Fund[/p][p]The IJF was the brainchild of founding Trustee and past President John Oaksey and came about following the devastating accidents of Tim Brookshaw and Paddy Farrell. Both falls resulted in severe paralysis which immediately ended both their careers. Since then the Fund has helped over 1000 jockeys and their families and has paid out more than £18m in charitable assistance. [/p][p]The Injured Jockeys Fund helps any rider who holds, or has held, a Professional or Amateur licence issued by the British Horseracing Authority including Apprentice, Conditional and Point-to-Point riders, including any spouse, partner, child or dependant they may have.[/p][p]The IJF has two Fitness and Rehabilitation Centres - Oaksey House in Lambourn, Jack Berry House in Malton, and a third, Peter O'Sullevan House will open in Newmarket in 2020.[/p][p]http://www.injuredjockeys.co.uk/[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
