My story

[p]My first half marathon![/p][p]The Virtual Doctors is a UK-based telemedicine service working in Zambia. It uses smartphones to connect Clinical Officers (who run the Rural Health Centres) with volunteer Doctors, when they need help and advice to treat patients who attend with unusual or complicated illnesses.[/p][p]This currently serves more than 60 health facilities in Zambia, covering 1.6 million people with no direct access to a doctor. Results show that the service helped patients' symptoms 93% of the time, avoided a referral to hospital in 77% of cases. 98% of Clincal Officers also said that the help they received was educational and increasing their own expertise for the future.[/p][p]I spent a year as a volunteer doctor in rural Zambia in 2003/4 and made a few trips out to work at the Rural Health Centres, so I know first hand what a challenging job the Clinical Officers are doing. I am excited to be a Virtual Doctor and now also running to raise funds to keep the service going.[/p][p]It costs approximately £1,500 to set up and train a Clinical Officer and provide equipment and bandwidth to access the service for 12 months.[/p][p]Thank you for supporting them and me![/p][p][br][/p][p]UPDATE 2/9/18 Thank you to all of you who have pledge their support so far: your generosity has already raised more than I had hoped, and smashed through the £250 target. I am really grateful - it will definitely add a spring to my step! But don't let that stop anybody else who wants to donate: the more the merrier...[/p][p][br][/p][p]UPDATE 7/10/18 Alas, I have sustained a running injury! Nothing serious - but at the moment I can only run about 3.5k - which means I am having to pull out of the half marathon next weekend. Very frustrating - but these things happen! At least Virtual Doctors will still benefit from your generosity: thank you for your support.[/p]
