My story

[p]THE RESULT!![/p][p]I have never been so grateful for all those training runs and nutrition advice - a huge thank you to my wife, Clare (chief coach / nutritionist / dietician / running buddy / and faster marathon runner!). I managed to achieve my objective of getting into the 3.40's by finishing in 3hours 47mins. Considering it was the hottest ever London Marathon, I am seriously pleased![/p][p]A huge thank you to all those who sponsored me. It kept me going and will make a real difference for the great work that MapAction do.[/p][p]Thank you[/p][p]------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------[/p][p]UPDATE[/p][p]I have now managed to complete all my long training runs and survived (even the physio has said I'm OK!!) and now looking forward to the calm before the storm.[/p][p]Thank you to every one who has sponsored me so far and if you feel the need to add a bit to the total I would be very grateful.[/p][p]To prove that I have actually managed to stumble over the start line you can track my progress on the Virgin Money London Marathon app - my race number is 58855.[/p][p]Thank you for all your support[/p][p]----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------[/p][p]Having somehow got myself fit enough to even consider doing a Marathon I wanted to make sure it had the biggest impact. As many also know I have a life long love of maps and all such associated things and it seemed appropriate to support the amazing work that MapAction do. Because of their work in prioritising and coordinating the response in humanitarian emergencies they can ensure that the other charities and support bodies can be more effective thus making their funding go further. It is a small charity and every pound donated makes a significant difference.[/p][p]I have only taken up running in the last 18 months as a way of keeping the weight off, but have found it to be a great sport and somewhere to unleash my competitive spirit as my family have come to know. To be able to do the London Marathon just wasn't something I believed I could do although, ever since helping at the finish in the early 80's it has always fascinated me. To have the chance of running this is an amazing opportunity, I don't want to miss.[/p][p]Thank you for your support and the impact it could have on so many more people.[/p][p]MapAction is a leading humanitarian mapping charity that works through skilled volunteers. Their mission is to save lives and alleviate suffering for people affected by humanitarian emergencies by mapping priority needs and helping to coordinate the response. In an emergency, people’s lives can be destroyed within a matter of seconds. The challenge for responders is to know where to start. Within hours of an alert MapAction mobilises a team of highly-skilled volunteers to map the needs of those affected and help coordinate the response. Their aim is to get aid to the right places quickly, so lives can be saved and suffering alleviated. As a long-term measure we also help to prepare government authorities, responders and communities for the impact of disasters before they strike. They deliver their service through a small team of 14 paid personnel (mostly part-time) and some 85 skilled volunteers. This makes their work very cost-effective. Just £35 could print 200 maps of a disaster scene, helping to get aid to those in greatest need.[/p][p] [/p][p] Since 2002 MapAction have responded to 71* humanitarian emergencies, which have impacted on the lives of tens of millions of people. Some of our most challenging responses have included the Ebola outbreak, Mediterranean refugee crisis and the Nepal and Haiti earthquakes.[/p][p] [/p][p] “ MapAction has completely transformed the speed and accuracy with which we can programme our response. I can’t imagine us being successful without their support. ”[/p][p] Jesper Holmer Lund, United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs[/p][p] [/p][p] “ MapAction is the glue that binds everyone together. Given how small they are, it’s amazing what they can achieve. ”[/p][p] Prince Harry, MapAction’s Royal Patron[/p][p] [/p][p] https://youtu.be/Q9N1-SDDNRE[/p][p]https://mapaction.org/ [/p]
