Team story

[p]Hendrik and Eden from Rick Stein Winchester are running in the ABP Southampton Marathon to support the Murray Parish Trust. Hendrik says: "My grandad and I used to run together when I was young. It will be great to do this again and be able to tell him I’m doing it to drum up some support for the awesome work The Murray Parish Trust does". Eden adds: "When I was a kid, one of my cousins was diagnosed with - and eventually passed from - cancer, all at an incredibly young age. Helping raise money to help give kids better treatment, better care and better chances - it's a no-brainer".[/p][p][br][/p][p]The Murray Parish Trust raise vital funds to advance paediatric emergency medicine, ensuring children affected by major trauma have the chance to receive the best emergency care. Set up by Sarah Parish and James Murray, the charity was created in memory of their late daughter Ella-Jayne, who died from congenital heart failure in 2009. Since founding The Murray Parish Trust in 2014 they have helped raise over £2.5 million for Southampton Hospital. This includes funding for a brand new Children’s Emergency & Trauma Department, 2 new bed bays for the PICU, a full-time counsellor and a specialist helicopter gurney to transport critically ill infants via Air Ambulance.[/p][p][br][/p][p]The Murray Parish Trust’s latest challenge is to fund a revolutionary intra-operative MRI (iMRI) Suite at Southampton Children’s Hospital. Taking images of the brain using intra-operative MRI technology during surgery will make a dramatic difference for children with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions including tumours, hydrocephalus, epilepsy and trauma. These real-time images give the surgeon a greater chance of totally removing the tumour in that first operation. The accuracy and precision of the technology greatly reduces the chances of damaging healthy tissue during surgery and, crucially, prevents a child from being sedated for longer than needed. The iMRI Suite will make the hospital a next generation centre for paediatric neurosurgery and pioneering research, which will advance the treatment and care of children across the region and beyond.
