My story

[p]We, Rob Fraser and Sam Cusworth, are attempting to complete the Bolton Ironman on the 4th July 2021 and an Ultramarathon (Lakeland Trails 55k) on the 10th July 2021. The Ironman consists of a consecutive 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and 26.2 mile run. For the Ironman, both of us have set ourselves the ambitious target of finishing with a sub-12 hour time, aiming to finish in the top 10 for our age division. The following weekend, we tackle the Lakeland Trails 55k route, a course that includes 3 high-mountain passes and 7,000ft of ascent, aiming to record a sub-8 hour time. [/p][p]Whilst doing this, we would like to raise money for both of our chosen charities, The Stroke Association and Mind Charity. Both of us feel passionately about these charities and hope to raise as much money as we can by taking on this challenge that we have set ourselves.[/p][p]Rob:[/p][p]Having had a stroke a couple of years ago, I became (rather suddenly!) aware of the potentially devastating and life-changing effects that strokes can have to both physical and mental health. I belong, however, to a small and lucky minority. Only ten percent of those who survive are lucky enough to walk away with no long-term physical disabilities and three quarters of survivors suffer from mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts (more on mental health from Sam below). [/p][p]The Stroke Association works tirelessly to support stroke survivors and their families in rebuilding their lives, carries out research in order to improve treatments, care and rehabilitation and campaigns in order to increase the awareness of stroke symptoms and the importance of taking emergency action. Your donations thus allow the Stroke Association to move closer towards their ultimate goal of making stroke a preventable and treatable disease. [/p][p]I am very much looking forward to training hard over the course of the next year and raising money for two charities that mean a great deal to both Sam and I.[/p][p]Sam:[/p][p]In having experienced mental health first-hand, specifically anxiety and depression, I know the importance of having services such as Mind available. Statistics about mental health, within the UK and globally are worryingly high. Within the UK, 1 in 4 people experience a mental health problem in any given year. 1 in 5 people will have suicidal thoughts and 1 in 15 will attempt suicide over the course of a typical lifetime. Mental health is rife within our society and everyone will likely know someone who is or has been affected by a mental health problem, highlighting the severity of the issue.[/p][p]Far too often mental health is mocked in society, from your friends and family to A-list celebrities. There is nothing embarrassing or shaming about mental health, but it is rarely taken seriously. It is everyone’s responsibility to become advocates for changing the negative stigma surrounding mental health. We need to be supportive of mental health in our society, not destructive. Those in need, need access to support to recover or live with their mental health condition.[/p][p]Mental health may affect us all at some point in our life, but it disproportionately affects the LGBTIQ+ and Black community, and young women (16-24). Mental health is pronounced in these demographics due to discrimination, social exclusion, inequalities and disadvantages amongst other factors. Therefore, these communities need more support than others, which Mind is supporting and working hard to address. [/p][p]Mind provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. The service they provide ensures that people get the right services and support at the right time, to help with their recovery and living with mental health issues. Mind have already taken big steps to provide support for mental health, but this is only the tip of the iceberg, much more needs to be done. Whether that is donating to mental health charities or simply smiling at a stranger in the street, you have your part to play. That smile could save someone’s life.[/p][p]I’m looking forward to the training with Rob over the next year and raising money for two extremely good causes.[/p][p]We will be providing updates on this page and both of our social media outlets throughout the year for those interested.[/p][p]We would both like to thank you for taking the time out of your day to read this, it is greatly appreciated![/p]
