My story

[p]Update 22 April 2019: 6 days to go, 10k completed in the blistering heat this weekend and achilles tendon feeling just about OK. Lots of nervous energy building up now! Looking forward to picking up my number later in the week.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Update 7 April 2019: I write this feeling nervous and with only 14 days to go - I spoke too soon on the injury front as training yesterday ended early with discomfort in the achilles tendon, so will spend the remaining days recovering and hopefully getting it strong. It's been an interesting training journey so far but having done 5 half marathon+ distances in the last 6 weeks the hard work has been done. I am looking forward to resting up now and getting round the course in hopefully around 5 hours![/p][p]Update March 2019: Hi everyone, I'm back and raring to go for the 2019 London Marathon! Training has been very tough with holidays and a busy social calendar, but so far whilst runs have been extremely tiring they have gone relatively smoothly with no injuries! Currently moving milage up week on week and looking to taper off soon.[/p][p]Update February 2018: It's with a heavy heart but I've had to postpone this marathon attempt until next year due to a ligament injury on my foot. It's been a painful decision but didn't want to risk any long term damage. Thanks so much for all donations so far, I will close this page soon and you will see me back next year![/p][p]For those who know me, they will know that I am by no means an athlete and whilst I’ve managed the odd 10k run, I’ve decided now is the right time to do my first marathon.[/p][p]It’s a daunting prospect, but I have taken the opportunity to run the Virgin Money London Marathon 2018 in aid of the Meningitis Research Foundation.[/p][p]James “Jam” was one of my best friends, and that’s despite his love for Arsenal FC! I’ve known him over 15 years, and we grew up through our teens spending every waking hour during our half-terms playing video games fuelled solely by chicken wings and chips.[/p][p]Jam was the type of person you’d want around at dinner, known for his intelligence and quick-wit with the odd dad-joke. He was charismatic and had an infectious optimism for life. He excelled in everything he did, from achieving top academic marks to progressing quickly in his banking career. He was a devoted friend, boyfriend and family orientated person and would make time for anyone to do the little things that were most important.[/p][p]Sadly, we lost Jam to meningitis on the 3rd February 2017. Meningitis is a cruel, brutal disease that can snatch a life away in the matter of hours. To say that this was difficult on family and friends is an understatement, it had such deep impact as there were no warning signs along the way. I never got to say goodbye.[/p][p]This is my small gesture in memory of Jam and supports my aim to raise awareness of this disease and to do my bit to ensure that no friends or family have to endure the heartbreak of losing someone so close to their heart.[/p][p]Please donate generously, every penny helps towards my fundraising target and towards a world free from meningitis.[/p][p]Thank you so much for reading, I’ll keep you all posted on marathon training progress![/p][p]Much love,[/p][p]Ron[/p]
