My story

[p] The Facts: [/p][p]Who: Ross Mckechnie, a PE teacher from Glasgow working in Shanghai[/p][p]What: 10,000 mile unsupported, self funded, solo bike ride from Shanghai to Glasgow[/p][p]When: Leaving July 15th 2019 aiming to arrive back in Scotland February 2020[/p][p]Where: Through more than 20 countries following the old silk road[/p][p]Why: To raise funds for Achieve More! Scotland a charity that helps the least privileged kids in Glasgow access sport, physical activity and increase their career prospects. [/p][p] [/p][p] How your donations could make a difference to the lives of Glasgow's young people[/p][p][br][/p][p]Level 1 - £1 – entry to a child to participate free of charge at our holiday camps at February, Spring Break, Summer and October.[/p][p] [/p][p]Level 2 - £1.50 - covers the cost of a healthy, nutritious meal, piece of fruit and bottle of water for a child attending our holiday camp[/p][p] [/p][p]Level 3 - £10 - will buy enough equipment to run a session [/p][p] [/p][p]Level 4 - £50 - will pay for the hire of a venue to provide a (free) dance class for up to 60 participants[/p][p] [/p][p]Level 5 - £100 – will pay for the hire of a football pitch for 3 hours on a Friday evening[/p][p] [/p][p]Level 6 - £500 – will pay for a young person to go through our volunteer programme, gain qualifications and new experiences, including attendance at a residential (at home or abroad)[/p][p] [/p][p]Level 7 - £1000 – will pay for 1 full week of activity across 40 coaching sites, catering for over 1000 participants[/p][p][br][/p][p]?Read below for my full story...[/p][p][br][/p][p]I'm Ross,[/p][p][br][/p][p]I've been working as a PE teacher in Shanghai for the last 5 years.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Although I love my job here and the students I work with, it is very very different from life back home in Scotland. The students I teach come from some of the richest families and have all the opportunities they could possibly want in life. [/p][p][br][/p][p]This is in stark contrast to the opportunities that some of the kids growing up in the most deprived areas of Glasgow face. I wanted to give something back to these communities. As a PE teacher I wanted to bring the joy of sport, competition and physical activity, as well as the whole host of potential skills and personal development that goes along with being involved in sport, to groups of kids around Glasgow. [/p][p][br][/p][p]While listening to the BBC Scottish Football Podcast I came across a charity that does exactly that. Achieve More! Scotland are doing amazing work on the ground delivering free sports, dance, employment opportunities and more to children and young people throughout Glasgow and the surrounding area. I knew instantly this was a cause I could get behind. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Now, a couple of things about myself; I'm passionate about sport and education, I'm adventurous and I'm always looking to set myself a new challenge. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Since I arrived in Shanghai I have always dreamed about cycling back to Scotland, and now that I have a charity that I can really get behind this seemed like the obvious challenge to set for myself. [/p][p][br][/p][p]I plan on cycling 10,000 miles through 20 countries in 8 months and every penny raised in support of this challenge will go directly to Achieve More! Scotland. The fundraising target I have set for myself is £10,000 thats one pound for every mile that I'll be cycling. The trip is completely self funded, so any donations that I receive will go towards changing the lives of Scotlands young people. [/p][p][br][/p][p]I really appreciate any support that you can offer with this challenge of a lifetime, even if its just a message of encouragement. If you would like you can follow my progress on Instagram @Ross.on.the.Road [/p][p][br][/p][p]Thanks Everyone![/p][p][br][/p][p]See you on the road![/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
