My story

[p][br][/p][p]THE TEAM MARGOT ROWERS ARE BACK ! (again) And we’re hoping that it’s third time lucky ! 🍀[/p][p][br][/p][p]Following the disappointment of the Celtic Challenge 2016 being cancelled owing to bad weather and then having to retire our boat the following year having made it two-thirds of the way across, many of the team vowed to return & complete unfinished business, so Celtic Challenge 2019 here we come ![/p][p][br][/p][p]On the Bank holiday weekend of 4/5 May 2019, Team Margot Rowers will again be embarking as a mixed team on a charity row across the Irish Sea in a Celtic longboat, in support of the charity, Team Margot Foundation to raise awareness of the urgent need for more people to join the bone marrow register.[/p][p][br][/p][p]The rowing event, which is called the Celtic Challenge, is the longest true rowing race, a 95 mile race across the Irish Sea from Arklow, Ireland to Aberystwyth, Wales. It is likely to take around 24 hours to complete.[/p][p][br][/p][p]100% of the funds raised for Team Margot Foundation will aid the charities grant giving capability and support grant giving to families caring for child cancer patients. [/p][p][br][/p][p]These ‘one-off’ £1,000 grants per family are referred to by the hospitals in which they are established as “emergency grants”, because once the proper checks have been verified, they’re usually deployed within 24 hours of receiving the recipient’s bank details. [/p][p][br][/p][p]To date, Team Margot Foundation has made over 150 such grants to families caring for child cancer patients in Kingston Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital as well as Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol children’s hospitals. To find out more about how Team Margot Foundation operates as a charity, please visit: http://www.teammargot.com/team-margot-foundation/[/p][p][br][/p][p]And whilst you’re on this page, we would love you to consider joining the register as a stem cell donor. Once you’re registered, if your tissue type is matched with that of a blood cancer patient, you could save someone’s life, or extend their time with their family and loved ones. It’s quick and simple to get the ball rolling, please take a moment to visit: dkms.org.uk/team-margot/ and find out more.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Thank you VERY MUCH for your support![/p][p][br][/p][p]Team Margot[/p][p]Together, saving lives[/p][p][br][/p][p]===[/p][p]ABOUT TEAM MARGOT FOUNDATION[/p][p][br][/p][p]Team Margot campaigns for every individual who is eligible, particularly those of mixed heritage, to register as a stem cell and bone marrow donor. [/p][p][br][/p][p]BACKGROUND[/p][p][br][/p][p]In October 2013, 14-month-old Margot Martini was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of blood cancer, and required a bone marrow transplant (also known as a stem cell transplant) to stand the best chance of survival.[/p][p] [/p][p]Family and friends came together as Team Margot to raise awareness of Margot’s plight and others desperately seeking a blood stem cell donor match. Margot’s mixed family heritage was the key obstacle to finding her a ‘perfect’ tissue-type match, owing to the lack of diversity on stem cell and bone marrow registers.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Margot eventually found a ‘suitable’ donor match and received her bone marrow transplant in February 2014. Unfortunately, Margot’s Leukaemia was extremely aggressive. She relapsed during that summer and passed away, aged 2 years and 2 months, on the 27 October 2014.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Margot’s family are unspeakably grateful to her selfless anonymous donor for his miraculous gift, which gave Margot extra time with her family and loved ones.[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p]FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE dkms.org.uk/team-margot/[/p][p][br][/p][p]WHAT’S INVOLVED WITH A STEM CELL OR BONE MARROW DONATION:[/p][p] http://www.teammargot.com/once-im-registered-how-do-i-actually-donate/[/p][p][br][/p][p]WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A STEM CELL TRANSPLANT & A BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT:[/p][p] http://www.teammargot.com/whats-the-difference-between-a-stem-cell-transplant-and-a-bone-marrow-transplant/[/p][p][br][/p][p]HOW TO REGISTER: [/p][p] http://www.teammargot.com/how-to-register/[/p][p][br][/p][p]HEAR FROM TEAM MARGOT DONORS ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE OF DONATION, PLEASE CLICK BELOW:[/p][p][br][/p][p]Ros Mafi (peripheral stem cell donor): http://www.teammargot.com/i-wouldnt-have-done-this-if-it-wasnt-for-margots-campaign/[/p][p][br][/p][p]Judy Leden MBE (peripheral stem cell donor): http://www.teammargot.com/guest-blog-by-judy-leden-mbe-peripheral-stem-cell-donor/[/p][p][br][/p][p]Katrina Krishnan Doyle (bone marrow donor): https://youtu.be/QzNxVhCo8do[/p][p][br][/p][p]Alexandra Casley (peripheral stem cell donor): http://www.teammargot.com/team-margots-fourth-donor-thus-far/[/p]
