Team story

[p]Hi, thanks for visiting our page![/p] [p]You may well know Jim Rowntree as a GP surgery reception manager, a police dog handler, a football coach, friend, neighbour, husband, dad, son, brother, uncle, brother in law, sports fan or one of a million other things. What you may not know is that Jim has always wanted to run the Great North Run, but in the past has been hampered by dodgy knees brought on from years of football playing![/p] [p]Then in 2013, Jim was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in his hip and spine. He spent the best part of a year bedridden and went through chemo, radiotherapy and a stem cell transplant. At one point he struggled to sit upright for more than an hour or so and we wondered if he'd ever walk again.[/p] [p]We're grateful to say that Jim is now in remission, and although he can't walk too far, intensive physiotherapy at Marie Curie Newcastle means he can get up and about a bit and is back to a much much better quality of life. [/p] [p]However Jim still can't walk unsupported, and only manages very short distances even with sticks, meaning that his dream of completing a Great North Run for himself after cheering on various family members in the past, seemed pretty far fetched... [/p] [p]But his kids weren't having that.[/p] [p]So Jamie, who's run the Great North Run once before, and Ceryn, who'll be doing her third GNR, decided they would make his dream come true by pushing him from Newcastle to South Shield, all to raise funds for Marie Curie as the family's way of saying thank you![/p] [p]The idea of fancy dress is still in discussion (all ideas welcome!) and as for a target time, we're really just hoping to get around the whole course and down that big hill at the end without Jim freewheeling into the sea!![/p] [p]Thank you so much for visiting our page, and for anything and everything you're able to donate. We know firsthand just how much every single penny will mean to Marie Curie.[/p] [p]Thanks again, love,[/p] [p]The Rowntrees x[/p] [p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
