My story

[p]This is something I categorically never imagined I'd find myself writing... can you sponsor me, for a real life, rather challenging proper sporting endeavour - the Reading Half Marathon, which due to the Coronavirus has been postponed to November 1st (so essentially I'll have trained for it twice).[/p][p]Whilst I know your timelines will be full of hardy souls running twice as far as me a couple of weeks later, I need to convey how hard I find running, how unpleasant I think the training is, how knackered my poor old knees are, and what an enormous personal undertaking it is. I need to make the torment of training worth it, which is where you come in.[/p][p]Since July I've been working for Home-Start Reading, a small charity that supports young families at times of crisis. In recent years we have seen many families struggle to cope with mental ill-health and physical disability, bereavement, broken family relationships, domestic abuse, poor housing and poverty. We see parents who are overwhelmed by their difficulties, frequently feeling isolated and lacking the self-confidence and strategies to break the cycle and give their little children the time and care that will ensure they have the best possible start in life.[/p][p]With two small children of my own, I'm aware how demanding raising them can be at times, even without the added stresses many of our supported families are coping with. At Home-Start Reading we rely on grants and private donations to continue to operate, and in the process of encouraging others to raise funds by running the Reading Half I decided I probably shouldn't ask others to do something I wouldn't do myself.[/p][p]Anything you can spare will go towards making a difference to the lives of young local families, and will make the grim reality of physio, hill sprints, and running round (and round) Reading worth it.[/p][p]Thank you.[/p][p][br][/p]
