My story

[lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt]After a disastrous 2014, I am determined to make 2015 better, which for me means pushing myself to do things that I never believed myself to be capable of – running up mountains and writing honestly about my life.[/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; min-height: 12px;"[gt][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt]I have addressed the latter by setting up a blog, the Up & Down Runner (updownrunner.com). [span=-webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;]The blog will be part diary, part training log for my two biggest running challenges, with the odd list, gear review, race report and rambling opinion piece.[/span][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; min-height: 12px;"[gt][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt]With respect to the former, I am competing in two races, one with two of my closest friends, the other alone.  [/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; min-height: 12px;"[gt][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt]The first will be the Mont Blanc Marathon, on 28 June.  As it sounds, this is a marathon (26.2 miles, or 42.1km), over Mont Blanc in the Alps (montblancmarathon.net/mont-blanc-marathon). With over 2.4km of ascent over the course (including a 1km climb in 4km), this could not be more different to the three flat, city marathons that I have completed so far.[/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; min-height: 12px;"[gt][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt]The second, even more unusual challenge will be the Cappadocia Ultra Trail 60k on 24 October 2015 (cappadociaultratrail.com/2015/).  This is a 62km (or 38.5mi in old money) ultra trail run along the hills and valleys of Cappadocia, a UNESCO world heritage site in central Turkey.[/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; min-height: 12px;"[gt][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt]In addition to pushing myself, and seeing two of the most beautiful places on Earth, one of my main goals is to raise as much money as possible for two fantastic charities that are very close to my heart, Mind and Campaign Against Living Miserably, or CALM for short.[/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; min-height: 12px;"[gt][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt]Nearly a year ago I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, after struggling with the illness for most of my life.  I only made it through 2014 with some fantastic medical care and the unerring support of my friends, family and employer. I am painfully aware that many people suffering from mental illness are not so lucky, and some go through their whole life without any help whatsoever.[/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; min-height: 12px;"[gt][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt]Mind provides advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem, and campaigns to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.  The materials on its website (mind.org.uk) have been invaluable to me and my family in understanding my condition, and giving me the courage to speak openly about my experiences.  [/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; min-height: 12px;"[gt][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt]CALM  exists to prevent male suicide in the UK.   In 2013, male suicide accounted for 78% of all suicides and is the single biggest cause of death in men aged 20 to 45 in England and Wales. This statistic shocks me every time I read it, despite the fact that I almost contributed to it continuing to be true in February 2014. Among other things, CALM: [/p][ul][lt]li style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt][span=font-size: 12px; font-family: Helvetica; color: #000000;] [/span] supports men in the UK, of any age, who are down or in crisis via its helpline and website (thecalmzone.net); [/li][lt]li style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt][span=font-size: 12px; font-family: Helvetica; color: #000000;] [/span]challenges a culture that prevents men seeking help when they need it; and[/li][lt]li style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt][span=font-size: 12px; font-family: Helvetica; color: #000000;] [/span]pushes for changes in policy and practice so that suicide is better prevented.[/li][/ul][lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 0px 28.3px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; min-height: 12px;"[gt][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt]In addition, the CALM website has some beautifully written articles and poetry that have inspired me to write about my experiences, and have shown me that I am by no means alone.[/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #181818; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; min-height: 12px;"[gt][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.[/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; min-height: 12px;"[gt][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px; font-family: 'American Typewriter'; -webkit-text-stroke-color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"[gt]I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
